Banning Smoking in Public Places Speech Have you ever come home with the stench of smoke just protruding from your clothes? Have you ever coughed and choked as you inhaled a cloud of smoke as a group of immature smokers passed by? If you have, then you would agree that neither one of these experiences is very pleasant, and could have been avoided if smoking was banned in public places. Everyone knows that smoking is not the healthiest activity for your body. The inhaled fumes go directly to the smoker's lungs and can result in a number of terminal illnesses in the long run. There's no doubt that your body would appreciate it if you would just set that lighter down. However, one thing that everyone forgets, or chooses to ignore, is that second hand smoking is just as harmful. Second hand smoking comes in two forms, which are sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke. Sidestream smoke is the smoke that comes from the lightened end of a cigarette, pipe, cigar, or whatever the case may be. Mainstream smoke is the smoke exhaled by the smoker. When non-smokers inhale these fumes, they are being exposed to involuntary smoking, or passive smoking. These chemicals are also extremely unhealthy for your body, especially as they accumulate in your system the more you breath them in. Here's something you may not know. According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco smoke itself contains more than 7,000 chemical compounds. More than 250 of these chemicals are known to be harmful and at least 69 are known to cause cancer. Just keep that in mind the next time you sit next to your buddy while he/she smokes away. But before you do, let me throw some more facts at you. Second hand smoking has been linked to lung cancer, and there is also some evidence that it might be linked to lymphoma, leukemia, and brain tumors in children, as well as cancers of the larynx (vocal box), pharynx (throat), nasal sinuses, brain, bladder, rectum,

Research conducted during the past several decades clearly documents that exposure to secondhand smoke causes death and disease in nonsmokers. Some research indicates that secondhand smoke is more toxic and potentially more dangerous than the smoke that is directly inhaled by the smoker.14,15 Nationally, the US Environmental Protection Agency has found secondhand smoke to be a risk to public health and has classified secondhand smoke as a group A carcinogen, the most dangerous class of carcinogen.16 A recent report from the US surgeon general on the health consequences of involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke concluded that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke and neither separating smokers from nonsmokers nor installing ventilation systems effectively eliminates secondhand smoke.9 In California, the state Air Resources Board declared secondhand smoke as a toxic air contaminant for which there is no known safe level of exposure.17…

The smoke that burns off the end of a cigarette or cigar actually contains more harmful substances than the smoke inhaled by the smoker. This means that people who don’t smoke but are regularly around those who smoke are exposed to the health risks of cigarette smoking.…

For most Americans, second-hand smoke is inevitable, as many smokers decide to smoke near building entrances and other common public areas. This is absolutely not healthy for anybody to be exposed to. The scary part about second-hand smoke is the fact that there is no way to be exposed to it “risk-free”. Even the smallest amounts can be harmful to our health. The amount of nonsmokers exposed to second-hand smoke has decreased over the years, which is great. I think it is still necessary to continue decreasing the level until it has reached the absolute…

Second hand smoking or passive smoking is a HUGE NO NO. My grandpa as a kid was afflicted by second hand smoking. Back then smoking was legal in cars. But Thank God that now it’s illegal, now you can not smoke in a car with a passenger younger than 16. My grandpa used to tell me stories of his past about how he got affected by smoking; Terrifying stories. When he used to go anywhere with his parents they always used to smoke, and he would always be inhaling the fumes, his parents didn’t know anything of how bad smoking could be for their son or for themselves. They would smoke 3 packs a day, that’s how addicted they were! So now cause of this immense interaction of smoking in his past he is regularly visiting the hospital and coughing heavily. All in all no one should have to suffer from someone else’s addiction, doesn’t matter who they are or what position in life they have (Emotional…

I walk around campus a lot and I see signs everywhere saying no smoking 500ft form doorways, but people still do it and as a student walking by and inhaling the smoke everyday is not good. I feel like the schools and other public settings where others are involved should put a ban on smoking. I believe that for a smoker the choice is theirs and I shouldn’t have to suffer with them by just merely walking by. Secondhand smoke is clearly a threat to both non smoking adults and children, so I hope we can take more actions to protect them. I also hope this speech will make smokers more aware of their surroundings and who they will be…
