Aubrie: A Short Story
falls asleep with her head on Parker’s lap. Once the movie ends, he picks her up bridal style. “I’m going to take her to bed.” He whispers to her grandpa.
Parker carries her to the bedroom and places in the bed, covering her with the blue blankets. He walks back out to the living room area to help her grandfather, who is putting out the fire. Parker helps him clean up a little before they both go to bed. As Parke walks towards the bedroom, Aubrie’s grandfather stops him.
“Parker wait a minute.” Parker turns around to face him. “There is something I need you to do.”
“Okay?”
“I need you to keep Aubrie safe.”
“What do you mean?”
“Who knows how much longer I am going to be here and you and I are all she got. I just need you to watch out for her and do whatever it takes to protect her.”
“Is she in some type of danger I should know about?”

“Did Aubrie ever tell you how her mother died, or is believed to have died.” Parker shakes his head ‘no’ in response. “When Aubrie was four years old, her and her mother were asleep in that room.” He points at the room where Aubrie is sleeping. “All I know is that I heard her mother screaming, and then my daughter was gone by the time I broke the door down. But the reason I am telling you to keep her safe is because her mother wasn’t the only one to go missing. My wife and I had a house not too far away from here, before we bought this cabin, and she went missing. She taken from our home in the middle of the night. All that was left was bloody footprints and an open window. Even before that, her mother disappeared in a similar way. It is very unusual, and no one has still figured out what is happening. I just need you to promise me you will protect

It was mid-winter in Salisbury, Vermont, 1956. The snow was starting to fall fast and the wind was picking up speed. “Father said that this was going to be the winter that comes back to bite us in the butt.” Said Ivy. Aubree had agreed with Ivy’s father, the winters here are always dreadful but the massive cold front from Canada would cause a record breaking winter in Salisbury. The two arrived to the small one story house. Three people lived with Ivy. John, Ivy’s older brother, Edward, Ivy’s father, and Betty, Ivy’s mother. “Ivy, you need to shovel the driveway.” Yelled Ivy’s father. “Ok!” Ivy yelled back.…

Observing Aubrey's brother come back as a walker made him flinch. He had expected that this would never happen. Everything Audrey had been through, she didn't ask for this. The brunette tightly held onto her as she wept in his arms, a small frown forming on his lips before he shook his head. "You're not alone, Aubrey." The recent fight that had just went down popped back into his head. He immediately regretted the words he said earlier. In a hushed tone, Carl slowly loosened his grip on her. "We'll bury him, I promise. But..for now, I need to make sure you don't die as well." He spoke, knowing that could potentially make her even more angry at him. "But, we'll stay out here as long as you want okay?" He looked back at the dead corpse next to…

There was a severe amount of disapproval from his siblings and Tabitha, while his mother remained rather neutral about the matter, but it wasn’t enough to sway him from this newfound purpose. Attacks were unpredictable until Kaiju ascended with a vengeance which left the only solution being taking the battle to the creatures invading. His family was at risk and—on a more selfish note—Rith detested the thought of dying a meaningless death as he scrambled to escape. Better to pledge his life to a cause and either fight his way to victory or be taken out in a blaze of glory then to cower in fear over endless possibilities. After seeing the ghost of Peter Quint at the window the governess discovers that he was intently looking for Miles. "'He was looking for little Miles.' A portentous clearness now possessed me. 'That's whom he was looking for'" (31). Again upon seeing Miss Jessel's ghost across the pond the governess tells Mrs. Grose that the apparition had "'fixed the child...with such awful eyes...with a determination-indescribable. With a kind of fury of intention'" (38). These two incidents directly connect the children to the reason Quint and Miss Jessel have returned to Bly, to possess and live through Miles and Flora. The governess also concludes that the children are aware of their possessors and are deliberately trying to conceal Quint and Jessel's existence. At the pond, for instance, Flora deliberately turns her back on the apparition, consciously ignoring its existence, then later denies to the governess that it had in fact existed. It is for this reason the governess takes up her job with a new determination to save the "lost" (40) children. Again when the governess finds Flora awake late at night staring down through her window at Miles who was down on the lawn "motionless and as if fascinated... looking...at something that was apparently above me" (53). Later on Miles explains he was…
