In times of elections, voters want to ensure that they choose the best candidate for each office. The 2012 race for West Virginia Senator between Joe Manchin and John Raese created a competition with commercial ads. One of the ads for Joe Manchin responds to the Carpetbagger John Raese’s Attack Ad. Manchin utilizes local firefighters in this commercial to appeal to the viewer’s emotions by creating a sense of safety, as well as, giving the voters reasoning to elect Manchin through the credibility of the firefighters. Commercials pertaining to elections typically contain information to pull their opponent down. Firefighters bring a feeling of safety wherever they travel due to the fact that when a family sits outside of their burning house, the heroic firefighter rushes to save as many of the family’s belongings and memories as possible. Local firefighter, Carl Estham, Mark Roberts, and Mayron Boggers, endorse Manchin’s campaign to enhance his credibility. One of the firefighters states, “Real Fighters...Real West Virginians” which gives Manchin a higher authority over his opponents. Estham states, “Like Joe Manchin, West Virginia is my home.” A West Virginia born and raised man contains the same desires as the traditional state’s people. Voters are more likely to elect someone with similar backgrounds and views. In addition, Mark Roberts affirmed, “Joe Manchin does not hire Philadelphia actors to play hicks in his ad,” to create an inferior image of Manchin’s opponent.     The screeching cry of a lost child sounds across the entire building through the crowd of people after a young boy is alone for only a minute. This image comes from an advertisement which includes a gloomy setting showing the sadness of something to appeal to the audience’s emotions. The “Quit Smoking” commercial, produced by Fiona Sharkie, starts with a mother and her child walking together through a crowd of people; toward the middle of the video, the mom and her child get separated making the child very upset and scared. The sadness of the child makes parents feel guilty for possibly leaving their children for good. This advertisement does not use logos because smokers do not often look at logic or they would not smoke to begin with because the box of cigarettes exclaims that smoking causes cancer; therefore, logos would not persuade this specific targeted audience.     This new survey commissioned by MGH, an integrated marketing communications agency, found that 32 percent of survey respondents change the channel as soon as a political advertisement airs and during political news coverage, and nearly half (47 percent) of viewers will change the channel or mute the TV during a negative political ad. The vast majority, 88 percent of survey respondents said they are turned off by negative political advertising. I found these numbers staggering. Additionally, when looking at the age breakdown of younger voters aged 18 - 24, the survey found slightly higher percentages: Forty-five percent change the channel during political news coverage. Thirty-nine percent change the channel as soon as they see a political advertisement. Scholars argue that exposure to campaign advertising boosts turnout by providing voter with campaign information and heightening voter’s interest in the election.
