Every time I watch the Superbowl, I find myself (under the interrogative look of my friends) bitching about the effectiveness of “xyz” commercial that somehow succeeded in producing laughter among the audience. Then I start explaining that too often the joke becomes bigger than the brand and when it does, chances are you will most likely remember the punch line than the advertiser. Ah a warm summer night on the lake, fishing and boating with friends. To fulfill the enjoyment of the trip, what is more important to do now then open a can of Budweiser. This theme was done in one of Budweiser’s many commercials. Budweiser manufactures and distributes beer around the world. This commercial in particular catches the eyes of the viewers. As it should be for broadcasting during a Super bowl. With that said, in a short period of time Budweiser tells a story of a young man and his new yellow Labrador retriever. Geico is a car insurance company which has used several advertising techniques that address many of the fifteen basic appeals, described by Jib Fowles, to gain potential customers (Fowles 1). For instance, the need for affiliation has been catered to through advertising depicting Geico as the best there is. People tend to affiliate themselves with top companies. Emotional appeal is catered to primarily; the premise being to invoke the idea that getting Geico insurance will make you happy. A series of “Happier Than” television advertisements were aired (Geico). Each episode portrays a random scenario, followed by two Bluegrass pickers named Ronny and Jimmy, performing a slapstick routine on a small stage. Each event leads to one picker asking a question along the line of, “How happy are people when they switch to Geico?” at which point the second picker delivers a punch line related to the content of the commercial (Geico). I chose the Best Buds Budweiser commercial for my essay. I think it was a sensitive commercial that targeting many different audiences. The commercial had a variety of appealing items. This product not only has a wide variety of audiences it also appeals to emotions, it creates a bond and has many benefits over other types of beers. For the 2010 Super Bowl, Doritos put out a commercial that was titled “House Rules”. In this commercial a young man comes to take a beautiful young, single mother out for their first date. While the mother is out of the room putting up the flowers the man brought, the man sits down to socialize with the son. As the man sits down he picks up one of the son’s Doritos, and just as he is about to put the chip in his mouth the son slaps him. Most of the commercials would have to advertise sex, kids, animals, or randomness in order to appeal audience. Then there are ads like the Dodge commercials. It sends a message that needs to be sent - respect wisdom. Social media can be cruel and demeaning especially to elderly people. The Dodge commercial that aired during the 2015 Super Bowl started off pretty pleasant, but that took a major turn quickly! While the elderly featured in the clip were giving a valuable advice to the audience, they then become a little aggressive.
