In the demand of intercultural communication, it is necessary to have one lingua franca to make nations easily communicate with each others. However, there is an essential question that which language is the best choice to become a global language? Is it English or Esperanto? In the article “Esperanto, the hope of the world”, publish in Esperanto – The Way Forward Conference – Bognor Regis, England in June 2011, Yan Rado presents that Esperanto should become a global language. In contract, Angla Sola, author of “What’s the point of Esperanto”, published in The Language Journal in 2011, mentions some reasons why Esperanto can not become a lingua franca. This essay will critically clarify two of the author's ideas.
2)In the article “Esperanto, the hope of the world”, Rado suggests two reasons to support that people should learn Esperanto as the world’s second language. He states that learning Esperanto language takes less time than English because of limited vocabularies and simple grammar structure. For instance, people just need a few hours to study how to use Esperanto to express the simple ideas while English takes learners years. On the other hand, Sola, the author of “What’s the point of Esperanto”, agrees that English should be the global language. She mentions that Esperanto is not a neutral language because it is affected by Western culture. To support for her idea, she acknowledges that using Esperanto takes Asian learner more than year to be skillful.
3)Sola’s argument is reasonable when she mentions that it is waste of time to learn Esperanto.In fact, English is used as the lingua franca in over the world, politics and some some issues in society use English as the major communication and promotion.It leads to learning Esperanto is useless. Moreover, one of the rules that people can not deny is when countries become more powerful in economy and society, the other countries will be promoted their trades and business with it, so they need to learn how to use this country’s language. For example, in recent year, the business of China is developing. Thus, some countries which want to take part in China’s market share, they need to learn Chinese to help them run their business with China effectively.
4)It seems that Sola’s argument that is more logical than Rado’s when she mentions that Esperanto is not a neutral language and it makes learner all over the world difficult to learn and practise. In fact, this language is not as popular as English. In Asian, besides Japan and China used Esperanto in the twenty century, there are no countries know about Esperanto language. As a consequence, there are few people decide to learn this language because it does not have any schools or Esperanto language centres. Moreover, this language is created Polish man, so it is affected by Western culture. As a result, Asian people have some problems in pronouns and express their ideas in Esperanto language. In addition, Asian’s writing style is quite different with Western countries, For example, in Eastern countries, such as China, Japan and Korea, they use hieroglyphics instead of latin alphabet as Western countries, so the learners find it not easy to use this language to write and communicate with native speakers.
5)In conclusion, this essay does not only compare the opposites ideas about is it Esperanto a global language, but also analyses the strength and weakness of both articles, “Esperanto, the hope of the world” of Yan Rado and “What’s the point of Esperanto” of Angla Sola. Sola’s arguments are overweight than Yan’s when the mentions that people may be affeced negatively when studying Esperanto, such as wasting their time and difficulty, while Yan’s ideas are weak when he tries to persuade that Esperanto is a lingua franca.In fact, people can not deny that English is the most common and useful language and no language can replace it to become the global language.
