Arn Chorn-Pond
Arn Chorn-Pond is the main character in “Never Fall Down”. The book is from the real story of Arn Chorn-Pond, and its written by Patricia McCormick. It’s about a poor boy that lives in Cambodia. He experienced wars, Khmer Rouge and the extreme things you have to do to survive. Arn survived through his smartness, kindness and sometimes coldness.
Arn survives mainly due him being smart all the time. Firstly, under the Khmer Rouge Arn joined the band that plays music to drown the sounds of the killing. This was really smart because he got off the hard work. Moreover, he befriended one of the guards.     Despite a strong opposition primarily from Vietnam, he had gained support from several major countries. After the bombing in Cambodia that began in 1969, the United States provided economic and military support for the Khmer Rouge. With the economic support, the Khmer Rouge was able to afford to continue their reign over Cambodia. The United States also aided in the destruction of the Cambodia that existed before Pol Pot by bombing and killing up to 150,000 Cambodian citizens in support of this regime (The Original Cambodian, 1993). This accounts for ten percent of the total death toll that resulted in this ruling. Along with the U.S., China also expressed support for the Khmer Rouge. They allied with them against the Vietnamese and the USSR, aiding them in military tactics and strategy. When Pol Pot wanted to go to war with Vietnam, China warned that the Vietnamese were more militarily advanced than Cambodia was. This prevented a potential disaster and downfall on the Khmer Rouge's part (Carvin, 1999). The Chinese also aided economically. They provided Cambodia with weapons in exchange for rice. This trade allowed Khmer Rouge to strengthen their military, gaining protection against their opposition. It also enhanced the relationship between China and Cambodia.     This book is about a little girl, and her six siblings, whose life gets change when the Khmer Rouge takes over Cambodia led by a guy name Pol Pot. Under Pol Pot's command everyone is sent to labor camps to help the government pay for weapons from the Chinese. Throughout the book Loung, the main character, has to wake up everyday not knowing if she’ll have enough to eat or if she would be able to go on another day. One of my favorite quotes, on the bottom of page 127, is when Chou, Loung's older sister, and Loung arrive at an all girls camp. "So what? I can take any one of them, but if they gang up on me, they can beat me. I don't let them know that. I don't care if I win, but I will draw blood. I will get in my punches." I like this quote a lot because it shows that she'll never give up. It also shows confidence, in that she's not afraid of no one. My second favorite quote is the second paragraph on page 200, "I am feeding the baby when one of the kids runs over and tells me Kim is coming with a man. I cannot dare to hope. Chou and I look at each other, our eyes full of fear, praying the man is our brother. I see Kim's figure as he approaches us. Meng walks beside Kim. I do not know whether to cry or run to him. I am filled with so much happiness. He is alive. We are a family." This quote was interesting to me because it marked a turning point. A point where the family is reunited and all their sorrows are ended. This showed how all of her anger is…
