The Unwanteds
Every year in Quill, thirteen-year-olds are sorted into categories: the strong, intelligent Wanteds go to university, the regular Necessaries and the artistic Unwanteds are sent to their deaths. See Alex and Aaron Stowe are twins living in a plain world called Quill, where being imaginative, musical or art gifted are all considered negative traits. All children exhibiting any of these undesired qualities quickly get tagged as "Unwanted", guaranteeing elimination before their thirteenth birthdays. Making everything more complex, Aaron has been labeled "Wanted" while "Alex" is "Unwanted" and sentenced to his death.
Thirteen-year-old Alex tries his hardest to be calm when his fate is announced as Unwanted, even while leaving behind his twin, Aaron, a Wanted. Upon arrival at the destination where he expected to be eliminated, however, Alex discovers a stunning secret behind the mirage of the "death farm" or the Lake Of Boiling Oil there is instead a place called Artime.
The creator of Artime Mr. Marcus Today has each child taught to cultivate their creative abilities and learn how to use them magically, weaving spells through paintbrushes and musical instruments. Everything Alex has ever known changes before his eyes, and it's a wondrous transformation. He makes new friends Lani Haluki, Samheed Burkesh, Meghan Ranger. There are wondrous animals too like Simber the golden stone cheetah with wings and Jim the winged tortoise who are protectors of Artime.
Even though everything seems happy and calm it’s not. Alex dearly misses his brother Aaron, so he paints a 3-D door that looks exactly like Aaron’s dorm room door. But what he doesn’t know is that Samheed and Will Blair are trying to make that same door. And what Samheed doesn’t know is that Will is planning to kill Aaron. When Alex hears about this he attempts to save Aaron, but he is too serious now to far gone and he is now assistant secretary for High Priest Justine the ruler of Quill.
