Argumentative Essay: Should Parents Have Homework?
Have you ever been doing your homework when you got to a problem that you couldn’t figure out? Maybe you guessed. Maybe you worked on it for another 45 minutes until you figured it out. Or maybe your parents helped you. But should your mom and dad be allowed to help? The answer is yes. Here’s why.
First of all, when parents help with homework, kids benefit academically. Parents shouldn’t give their kid the answer, but they can help them by correcting them when they’re wrong and explaining what they should do to solve the problem. Another way parents can help without giving the answer away is by quizzing them on a vocabulary or math test that’s coming up. They don’t have time to do a lot of homework. There are team sports, music lessons, religious activities, and other activities. Many parents feel like it’s their job to help their kids if they need help finishing their homework. You might say that “yes, kids may be busy, but part of growing up is learning to balance extracurricular activities with the demands of schoolwork” (scope magazine, pages 20- 21, lines 64-67), but if kids are so busy that they can barely even spare enough time to eat dinner, how are they going to have time for an hour and a half of homework? Parents can help the kids finish their homework faster without giving away the answer.
Finally, homework is very demanding on kids. “In most U.S schools, homework has become more demanding and time-consuming (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 33-35). Studies have shown that most kids feel very stressed about schoolwork and homework. There is a lot of pressure to do well in school. Some kids feel like “if they don’t get help from their parents, they will be at a competitive disadvantage with classmates who do.” (scope magazine, pages 20-21, lines 69-72).
