There are several reasons why ethics and integrity are important for a police chief or county sheriff. One reason that ethics and integrity are important in this position as they set the model for what all the officers underneath them should act like. Ethics are the moral philosophy that a person has when going about their daily life, such as doing good things or acting in a manner that a person would want to be treated in. Morality is the beliefs that a person should have about the proper kinds of behaviors. Law is the written rules that society has which are enforced by law enforcement officers. Something may be unethical or morally repugnant to one person, but are not illegal and something that a law enforcement officer is unable to do anything about. For instance, homosexual relationships are considered by some to be immoral, but they are currently not breaking the law in themselves. Therefore, there would be no call for law enforcement to try to break an all female couple up or arrest them for their sexual orientation itself. Law enforcement officers are concerned with the law of the area that they are working within rather than the ethics or mores that could be found there. There are some laws that may have to do with unethical behavior, such as defrauding people out of money with a fake cancer diagnosis, or laws that have to deal with morality as some places still have sodomy laws where a male homosexual couple could be charged with this if they were caught in the

    My first interviewee officers jack Davidson, patrolman from Somers point police department. When interviewing Patrolman Davidson, I found the following to be his impressions of the police force in general. Officer Davidson spoke of why ethics and character are important in the field of law enforcement. His response was that ethics and character go hand in hand. In law enforcement it seems that there are so many reasons to do the right thing. The reasons began with public opinion and also should include their influence on the youth who will be growing up to be citizens of the city, state, or country. If a police officer does not behave with good character he is not a good example, and may, in fact, become a bad example for a child to believe is acceptable. To uphold the law, one must be able to look above all the things that could influence them to behave poorly. If an officer allows someone to change their outlook in a negative way, whether it is a criminal, a family member, or even another police officer, then they are not displaying good character. Ethics are as important, if not more important, than character. One can display an incredible character, but when it comes time to follow the rules of ethics, the temptations of simple favors by the law-abiding citizens of the community can sway an officer’s choices, and can cause them to make a poor choice. Even the slightest favor from someone can lead to a dangerous future occurrence. If a citizen provides freebies for a police officer, then the officer is expected to provide special favors for the citizen. This can be expected in forms of protection, additional police presence, or even something disreputable like fixing a ticket, or letting them off with a warning instead of a ticket.     Police officers with integrity must possess trust, effacement of self-interest, courage, intellectual honesty, justice and responsibility.     The Law Enforcement Code of Ethics on the IACP web page serves the same purpose as the comparable code of ethics for many other public servant agencies. Chiefly and principally I believe they are a set of values that are not just the stated policy of conduct expected of law enforcement officials. They are a set of values that the officers who swear their allegiance to not only abide by but should believe in out of respect for their predecessors as well as their profession. The main points I drew from the code of ethics follow a few general points. Firstly, and most obvious, is the duty of the law enforcement officer is service to the community as well as its safety and improvement. Secondly is duty to the constitution and rights of the ones they protect. This includes not just the innocent or the victims but the perpetrators with an emphasis on liberty, equality, and justice. The third main point I observed is the responsibility of a law enforcement officer to conduct him/herself, both on and off duty, in a respectable manner. Maintained within this are the values of courage, respect, courtesy, and honesty.
