Appearance Or Reality Distinction?
What is the ‘appearance/reality’ distinction? Discuss how at least one philosopher dealt with the problem. How has science increased the discrepancy between the way the world seems and the way it really must be? Consider the impact the scientific turn has had on the philosophy of reality.
Protagorean Theorem

Protagoras "Man is the measure of all things"

No expert can tell me how to live no matter what their level of education may be. Their reality isn’t mine. I’m the master and apprentice of my own reality.

Quoting a textbook is irrelevant. Why should I accept somebody’s interpretation over my own? Why are philosophy textbooks even a thing that people read? Wouldn’t you be better off reading what the actual philosopher wrote instead of what somebody else thinks of it? Why do I even care about what the philosopher wrote? I can’t be 100% certain, but I’m pretty sure that those dead philosophers we’re reading about aren't me. Although if everything is just in my head then I must have created them and their philosophies. I created everything. Bold statement: I’m God. I just can’t seem to remember when I did all that.

As far as I know, my birth was the dawn of time

Use your imagination. There are no limits. So maybe everyone else thinks that you're a dick. Who cares? Others might, but you shouldn’t because you know that you didn’t start that fight for no reason. You know that he looked at you funny and you took it upon yourself to teach him a lesson. You’re making the world a better place. How noble of you. You only have to agree with others if you actually agree with them. And even if you do agree, you could still argue something different. People could try to get you to see things their way, but if it doesn’t seem like the truth to you then don’t believe

BETWEEN APPEARANCE AND REALITY Bertrand Russell once asked, “Is there any knowledge in the world which is so certain that no reasonable man could doubt it?” (Cahn, 2012) In his own method, he believed this to be false; after all, everyone perceives the world differently than the person next to them. By using a table as an example, he explains that everything should be questioned, even the things that appear to be absolute. In this paper, Russell’s theory is compared to those of René Descartes and David Hume. Descartes convinces himself that everything in life is a falsehood; from the world around him to his very limbs. To combat this, he views everything as deception. He admits to being “lazy” occasionally, slipping into the habit of believing instead of doubting the things around him.…

Everything was created by God, in the beginning God created the heavens and earth. (Genesis 1:1) For me this means to treat everything with the same love and respect that I give God, to not love and respect the creation is to not love and respect the creator. His creation is what proves he is real to me, all of the beauty on earth could not have happened any other way. The popular belief of an explosion creating earth is insane, the only thing I have seen an explosion cause is destruction. His creation shows me that he loves not only us but the earth also, he could have made it all look the same. He made it all beautiful, he is the greatest artist of all time.…

The key terms in these con tentions are 'reality' and 'knowledge', terms that are not only current in everyday speech, but that have behind them a long history of philosophical inquiry. We need not enter here into a discussion of the semantic intricacies of either the everyday or the philosophical usage of these terms. It will be enough, for our purposes, to define 'reality' as a quality appertaining to phenomena that we recognize as having a being independent of our own volition (we cannot 'wish them away'), and to define 'knowledge' as the certainty that phenomena are real and that they possess specific characteristics. It is in this (admittedly simplistic) sense that the terms have relevance both to the man in the street and to the philosopher. The man in the street inhabits a world that is 'real' to him, albeit in different degrees, and he 'knows', with different degrees of confidence, that this world possesses such and such charac teristics.…

Generally speaking, plays normally incorporate a conflict that the characters struggle to conquer through the course of the play. Reality vs. illusion is a frequently used conflict that essentially broadens the mind of the characters and the audience. Reality is the awareness of something as a fact and illusion is misconception of an idea or belief. The central conflict of reality vs. illusion is respectively portrayed throughout an abundance of plays, especially in Life is a Dream by Pedro Calderón de la Barca and Man of La Mancha by Dale Wasserman. Both protagonists of each play, along with other characters, experience a realization of what is real and what is a dream. Although plenty of the characters display this realization, Miguel de Cervantes (Don Quixote) and Dr. Carrasco in Man of La Mancha and Segimundo in Life is a Dream are the more prime examples of this conflict.…
