Movie Analysis/Management Styles

For those not old enough to have lived through it, a story of shooting for a landing on the moon, suffering an explosion on the spacecraft on the way to the moon, not landing on the moon, and then narrowly making it home to Earth is the story of Apollo 13.
When facing issues, conflicts, and the attainment of goals, having the resources of a fully functional manager and team are irreplaceable. A manager that has clear goals and strategies in place is more likely to succeed even when faced with the greatest types of adversity. Every employee of NASA should know about the tragic event of Apollo 13. The background of the team began with the completion between the U.S. and Russia and their space exploration programs. What started out as a routine trip to the moon and back soon became one of the biggest crises NASA had ever experienced. From understanding the plight of the spacecraft, to knowing what needed to be done, to creating a CO2 converter out of materials only available on the spacecraft, the flight is a clear lesson on how to manage a team in a crisis.

In many projects, it always comes back to a stressful situation, where quick decisions must be made which have a major impact on the achievement of the task at hand. Many managers often ask for advice on how to handle such situations in order to be a good leader and achieve maximum results. In order to be an effective manager and to be able to influence other and exercise high degrees of control, some rules should be followed. I will give a few examples of how Gene Kranz managed to promote teamwork and to achieve the best possible solutions despite unprecedented problems, lack or resources and time pressure.

One must remain optimistic and believe in themselves and the team to achieve a set goal. Without personal convictions managers will not be able to motivate the team to developed new solutions, continue to working and foster collaboration. Gene demonstrated

    Apollo 13 was an ordinary launch, but disaster was near. Things weren't even going well pre-launch, as one of the crew members had contracted german measles, so he was left behind and replaced. They launched, and everything seemed to being going smoothly. The astronauts held a 49 minute TV broadcast, but 9 minutes later, an explosion shook the craft. Oxygen tank two blew up, causing number one to fail. They say gas venting out of the side of the ship. Also, ⅔ of the power cells had failed, so everything noncritical was turned off. Because of the failures, they had to conserve water and watch carbon monoxide levels. There wasn't enough power to purify water, so it was estimated to run out 5 hours until earth re-entry. Carbon Monoxide was also a problem, as the filters were broken and the extra ones from the lander were not compatible with the cockpit. They fashioned an adapter with tape, cardboard and plastic bags. Eventually, they made it home safely.     There was an accident on the spacecraft 2 days after it was launched into space. The accident was that wires were exposed inside the oxygen tanks through manufacturing and testing errors before the launch. The night of August 13, 1970 a spark from the exposed wires caused a fire, which ripped apart one oxygen tank and damaged the other inside the Odyssey, spacecraft.     When Gene Kranz says that it will be there finest hour, he was completely true. It will be the finest hour for the Apollo 13 mission. They “won” while failing, because a malfunction which NASA had little to no control over which looked life threatening hit the astronauts and NASA managed to overcome the problem they had been faced with. The Apollo 13 mission in general was a failure because it stood no chance of accomplishing the goal it was supposed to. The teamwork that NASA developed during the Apollo 13 mission was astounding as everyone worked together to save those three people’s lives. The people were given the materials the astronauts had and worked to make a functioning device that could help funnel the power into the pod the astronauts were in to save their life. The biggest part teamwork played in the movie was the sudden change in crew. The crew had little time to adjust to their newly appointed pilot and they had to quickly adapt to the change in crew. The men not being as familiar to the new crewmate spent a lot of time in isolation with their newly appointed pilot and interacted well with the rookie who was a little shaky on the whole flying scheme. Apollo 13 can be considered the finest hour because it took a situation that looked very grim and had the odds working against them for every turn they took. NASA handled the pressure pretty well and they put everyone on the ground in the same situation that the astronauts so that instead of it seeming like there were only three astronauts to figure a way back to earth it was almost as if there were forty astronauts in space working to get back to earth. The greatest part of the mission was the skepticism that almost broke the mission from within.
