An objective summary of opposing views including their strengths, A point by point discussion of the limitations of opposing views, A summary of your viewpoint and your understanding of the issue, A point by point discussion of both strengths and limitations of your position, arguing overall that yours is superior, and a conclusion that drives home your thesis and looks to the future.

3. It is important to know your opposition’s stance so the you can present it to the readers in a fair, reasonable, and complete way and acknowledging its strong points.

Generally speaking, a research paper is usually presenting facts about a topic (e.g. a paper about the Great Depression), while an argumentative essay is far more subjective; presenting an assertion with information to support the assertion (e.g., a paper about which candidate would make the best president and why).
