An Interview with a Small Business Owner
Alan Davis: A Local Favorite

After graduating college, my plan is to open up a small sporting goods store in my hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. When deciding who I wanted to interview, at the last minute I changed my mind and chose Alan Davis, owner of Princeton Sports and Goods in Columbia, Maryland. I chose to interview him because of his path he has traveled through life and the steps he has taken to be the best business owner he can be. He is resourceful and knowledgeable, and he is very charitable, giving to charities and other events that fuel the community of Columbia, Maryland. Mr. Davis is halfway through completing his masters. He got his bachelor’s degree from University of Maryland, and he is currently finishing up there by taking one or two classes a year. His degree is in Business, Personnel Management, and Advertising. He is the third generation in his family to own Princeton Sports and Goods, and he did an incredible amount of volunteer work during and after college. Mr. Davis worked his way up the ladder at Princeton Sports, and I feel this is honorable. He is very smart and he knows business well. Princeton Sports is a landmark in Baltimore, and he runs the store effectively and efficiently. I would like to be like this after I graduate college because he is well-respected and well known in the sporting goods aspect of sales in Maryland. The part of the interview I found most interesting was where Mr. Davis noted that he had done “An INCREDIBLE amount after college. I have served on almost every board in Howard County including help form the Police Foundation and The
Festival of the Arts. I am currently on the Howard County General Hospital
Foundation Board”. I found this interesting because for some reason I believed that volunteer work would stop after college, and I would go on to living a normal life. Mr. Davis does a lot of volunteer work now, even when he doesn’t have to. Mr. Davis isn’t all business. He is an expert skier,

For this project, I selected Jammie Serrano as my business owner to interview. I chose her, because in her field, she does her job very well. She has accomplished many things such as writing her own book called Stop Guessing Towards Your Goals by Jammie Serrano. She was also featured in the TK Business Magazine and was recognized for Topeka’s Tope “20 Under 40.” Jammie has also became friends with famous people and has also gotten the chance to work with them. People such as Vicki Gunvalson from the show The Real Housewives of Orange County. What also makes this more interesting is that is she also my aunt. I am going to go over things such as her job duties, the general market conditions, her general experiences, advice she has for students and advice she has for college graduates.…

Virginia State University’s Athletic Director, Mrs. Peggy Davis, came to visit and speak in our Organization and Administration of Athletics course on Monday, October 19, 2015. She was very inspiring and motivational in her talk with us. She touched down on a few key points as to how she got to her position in athletics as well how to stay there. She started off by stating that we must learn everyday from successful people. When she mentioned this, the 1-Minute Manager was brought to my mind because the young man in the book was looking for a successful coach to model after. Mrs. Davis also mentioned that we must learn from our success as well as our failures.…

As stated in my career timeline, my goal is to become an athletic director for a high school. I believe this job will provide myself with personal fulfillment that I would not achieve anywhere else. For this interview I reached out to a family friend that personally knows the interim athletic director at Gordon State College, Gary Sharpe. Before holding his current position, Mr. Sharpe spent ten years as an assistant baseball coach for Gordon State College. Prior to his collegiate career he served as the head baseball coach for Upson-Lee and coordinator for the Georgia Dugout All-Star Games. Needless to say that Mr. Sharpe has crucial sport management experience from working at the collegiate and high school levels.…

Yet, the various organizations at Austin College sparked my interest, and slowly but surely I began to get involved. Although I have been overwhelmed at times, I quickly learned that being involved in the Sherman community and Austin College’s organizations have become a vital part of my college experience. My experience in these short 7 months have taught me the value of service and being involved. When I performed service events in the past, it was to gain service hours and build up a résumé. Now I serve because helping others give me a genuinely great feeling. My involvement in organizations has helped me to develop character traits such as, integrity, leadership, and service, and other traits that simply cannot be taught in a classroom. I know that these everlasting seeds of integrity, service, and leadership will continue to flourish well beyond college.…

When I had first been accepted into the National Honor Society, I never fathomed that it would change me as much as it did. As a Junior in high school I was excited to be apart of such a prestige group, but I didn’t realize how much of an impact that some of our group’s volunteer opportunities would have on me. In my Junior Year I had helped out with the Red Cross Blood Drive at Pillager High School. Though my volunteer experiences in my Junior Year were memorable to me, the volunteering that I was apart of my Senior Year ended up being the most meaningful to me.…

I think if Eric were to tell me how to open and run a successful Business he would start by telling me to know exactly what kind of business it is I would want to open. Then that I should do research meet other business owners and talk with them about the different ways to run the business. I also think Eric would tell me that I might want to find a job working for a business that I could one day own. This would not only help me by gaining experience as well as a potential business partner. I think he might also tell me that it takes hard work and determination to be successful. Another thing he might tell me is a little risk is ok but not to get in over my head. To make sure not to borrow more than would be able to pay back, to be sure to keep track of all the company finances account for every penny.…

Early in his days of only being a student and contributing to a one shop business that changed over as little as 10 years into our current company, by selling the products to his fellow students, he not only started on ground zero, but also was he willing to share in a dream, that he knew has the potential to develop into something very big. What he possibly did not realise back then, was that, largely due to his input, growth, development and commitment, he contributed largely to what the company is today, which…
