Chapter 5 Ethics in Research

Below is a summary of a nursing study. Read the summary and then answer the factual questions that follow:

Singleton investigated the behaviors of nursing students in crisis or emergency situations. She was interested in comparing the behaviors of students from baccalaureate versus diploma programs to determine the adequacy of the preparation given to students in handling emergencies. Fifty students from both types of programs agreed to participate in the study and signed a form agreeing that their participation was voluntary. The study was described to them as an assessment of their nursing skills: the investigator wanted to observe reactions to crises as they might occur naturally, so participants were not told the exact nature of the study. Each student was instructed to take the vital signs of a "patient" and to record the information. The "patient," who was described as another student but who in fact was Singleton’s confederate, simulated an epileptic seizure while the vital signs were being taken. A research assistant, who did not know the educational background of the subjects, observed the timeliness and appropriateness of the students' responses to the situation. Participants filled out a demographic form, but these forms did not record their names. Immediately after participation, the students were debriefed about the nature of the study and were paid a $10 stipend. a. Were the study procedures reviewed by an IRB or other ethics review group? b. . Are the study participants in this study “vulnerable subjects”? c. Was coercion used in this study? d. Was informed consent obtained? e. Were participants deceived in any way? f. Were data collected covertly? g. Did this study pose an ethical dilemma for the researcher? h. Was anonymity assured? i. Did the study participants themselves benefit from the study? j. Did participants ever learn about the purpose of

MOST of us know, or think we know, what the first Europeans encountered when they began their formal invasion of the Americas in 1492: a pristine world of overwhelming natural abundance and precious few people; a hemisphere where -- save perhaps for the Aztec and Mayan civilizations of Central America and the Incan state in Peru -- human beings indeed trod lightly upon the earth. Small wonder that, right up to the present day, American Indians have usually been presented as either underachieving metahippies, tree-hugging saints or some combination of the two.…

Much of what is taught in History classes around the world is rarely about how America really came to be what it is today. I cannot remember a lot of what I read about the start of our country but I do know that I was taught that everything started with Christopher Columbus. After reading a good sum of written materials I feel that I am better informed. While the so-called discovery of Columbus did pave the way for many changes there is more to it than meets the eye.…

The economy plays an important role in colonial America. The leaders on the New England colonies prided themselves on the idea that religion was the primary motivation for emigration, but economic motives were hardly unimportant. The American colonial economy was export-driven, although by far the largest share of output was consumed internally. Joint stock companies financed the initial conquest of New England and the Chesapeake colonies. Investors were expecting profits from the riches of the New World but would end up basically paying the colonists' bills. After several years of trial and error, the colonists discovered that agricultural goods such as corn, wheat, tobacco, rice, indigo, and naval stores were in great demand in England and Europe. By the mid-seventeenth century, trade under England's support was mutually beneficial. The English navy protected colonial commerce, and colonists gained a guaranteed market in England and access to English and Scottish credit and manufactured goods. The English gained markets for manufactured goods, profits from the sale of colonial staples on the Continent, and interest payments on the credit they extended.…

When Historians understate the faults of columbus, rather than condemn him, he is given praise for his discovery of America. I agree with the author for saying that “... but an ideological choice.
