Alcohol Abuse In The Glass Castle By Rex Walls
The Glass Castle is about a girl who tells the events of her childhood past and how dysfunctional her family was, especially her father Rex Walls. Jeanette’s father, Rex Walls is a drunk and sometimes abusive to his family. He drinks all the time to escape reality. Rex has been drinking since he was a teenager. He is a prime example of an everyday drunk who takes any opportunity to get alcohol.
I think the reason he became a drunk was because of his mother. She was probably abusing him sexually as a child .He never went to a therapist to talk about the abuse so he doesn’t know how to cope with it. He just turns to alcohol to forget about what he had to deal with at home. Jeanette and her siblings used to look to their father, but as they got older they realized how unreliable and

It didn’t work though because he found it and took it. Jeanette notices that the money is gone and she tells Lori. They are both upset that their father took the money. Jeanette confronts him about the money and he denies it. She knows that he is lying which hurts her even more that he just lied to her. I think that Rex should have gone to therapy and rehab. If he had gone then he wouldn’t have become an alcoholic and he could have been alive to this day. I guess back then he felt like he didn’t need help and that he could deal with it by himself. Which isn’t true because look what happened afterwards. It’s what’s wrong with certain people now days. They have too much pride and don’t want to seem weak when things like that happen to them. They feel embarrassed or ashamed about it so they won’t tell anyone about it. Since Rex is a guy he feels embarrassed because the world makes it seem like its only girls who get raped or molested. If a guy was to get molested or raped then people don’t seem to care as

Jose Delgado is one of the two examples given in the book of lapses in critical thinking. He believed he found a procedure to control aggression. Delgado demonstrated this procedure by placing an electrode in the bull’s brain (in the caudate nucleus) and then as the bull charged he activated the stimulator that sent an electrical current to the electrode. Delgado concluded that the caudate must be a taming center since caudate stimulation stopped the raging bull. There are many reasons why Delgado’s demonstration was not significant. The stimulation could’ve hurt the bull and could’ve caused dizziness or confusion. The second example is Dr. Egas Moniz. Dr. Moniz was awarded the Nobel Prize for developing the prefrontal lobotomy. Prefrontal lobotomy is a surgical procedure in which connections…

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls is a memoir about her life, throughout the memoir you get to meet her parents which can be judged as a parent in many different ways. The parenting style that is most exemplified by Rex and Rosemary's walls is an uninvolved parent. Rex and Rosemary are uninvolved parents because when certain situations occur they failed to communicate correctly“ I asked Mom and Dad if we should close the doors and windows when we went to sleep. They wouldn't consider it.” (103) Rex and Rosemary failed to communicate the importance of safety as stated in the quote before because if they cared about their safety from intruders they would have allowed them to shut the windows but instead…

Throughout these chapters, more of Rex Walls’ true personality is exposed. Rex seemed to grow more oblivious to his alcoholism and the consequences to his actions. Like before, he would often return home late, however, he gave an angry impression full of rage and destruction through actions such as breaking “windows and smashed dishes and furniture until he’d spent all his anger” (Walls, 112). In church, Rex would speak out inappropriately and insult the religion while all those who follow it witness. Yet, his family would justify his actions by saying, “Don’t worry, God understands. He knows that your father is a cross we must bear” (Walls, 105). After reading of Rex’s behaviors throughout these chapters, I believe his inner gloom and despair…

Alcoholism is a very prevalent problem in The Glass Castle and Jeanette Walls’ life. This quote from the book, “No child is born a delinquent. They only became that way if nobody loved them when they were kids. Unloved children grow up to be serial murderers or alcoholics,” (Walls 83) shows how much her life was influenced by this problem. Maybe she knows what happened in her father's past that turned him to alcohol, and maybe she thinks that when people are treated the way she is by her father, their only option is to use things like this to cope with there problems. There are thousands of children in America alone that have to deal with this problem in their daily lives. Whether it be grandparents, parents, or siblings, they watch and feel…

She was able to make amends in Gordon’s name and was able to mend any broken fences Gordon left behind with his family. Jean was able to know about him, all because she held onto his phone after he died. Gordon’s family invited Jean to a dinner at their house, where she gave out presents from the diner where Gordon died and she made it seem as if they were intended for them. In the play “Dead Man’s Cell Phone”, Jean created a life when she “knew” Gordon and pretended to work with him, Jean: “Yes. In his last moments. He wanted to give each of you something. From the cafe. Before he died. He was thinking of all of you.” (Ruhl, scene 5;39). Jean gives Hermia a salt shaker, “This salt is for you, Hermia. Because he said you were the salt of the earth”(scene 5;39). Jean gives Dwight a cup, “Because Gordon said you were like--a cup. Because you can hold things. And they don’t--pour out” (Ruhl, scene 5;39). Dwight was moved that his brother thought to give him this since he believed Gordon did not think of him at all. Something that Gordon left behind for his mother Mrs. Gottlieb, a spoon for her cooking(Ruhl, scene 5;40). His mother is very upset about this and Hermia explains, “We never talk about her cooking”(Ruhl, scene 5;41). Before this encounter, Jean did not know anyone of Gordon’s family or Gordon, through his phone and the stories she heard at the funeral, she…

Alcoholism, although thought mostly of its impact on the alcoholic themselves, it is also a very present problem in the ruining of his or her friends and their families lives. Someone who may be a fully functional, great person to his or her family may be extremely dangerous, dishonest, and destructive while they are under the influence of alcohol. This instance occurs in "The Glass Castle" with Rex Walls and also occurs regularly in our society today, such as abusive parents, and husbands. Without alcohol Rex was intelligent, responsible, honest, and a overall respectable father figure, but when under the influence he would bring his entire family down mentally and physically. Alcoholism's effects can indirectly abuse a family because of the immense change in behavior and discombobulate the family's daily life in many ways. When Rex promises Jeanette that he will quit drinking entirely for her birthday, Jeannette believes him. Sooner than later this promise is broken and Jeanette is mentally wounded from the let down she endured by Rex. "I couldn't believe he had gone back to the booze"(Walls 23), Jeanette says after being disgusted with her father's dishonest false claim of a complete withdrawal of any alcoholic beverage. Alcoholism will not only bring down yourself but will also bring your entire family on the rollercoaster of pain and suffering.…
