Ever since its establishment in 1996, WestJet has aimed to operate as a low-cost carrier while employing non-unionized members in a unique organizational culture. In its simplest form this unique organizational culture can be labeled as a labor managed firm. In a labor managed firm employees are owners, and they are affected by the company’s performance through profit sharing. Then it should not be surprising that in labor managed firms, the employees can voice their opinions and actually contribute ideas and theories in regards to how to best run the company, or the airline in this case. An interesting example for WestJet: the employees have formed a group, dubbed the ‘WestJesters’, they do various things to improve the customer’s (referred to as ‘guests’ in WestJet language) experience such as developing little jokes that flight attendants tell. WestJesters is one of the several committees of flight attendants that meet regularly to discuss everything from customer service to language and culture.…

Teamwork is very important at Southwest and employees are cross-trained. Employees are encouraged to be responsive to fellow employee needs first and then to customer needs. Flight attendants prepare cabins for passengers, and ramp agents help by cleaning toilets, unloading baggage, and stocking planes (Czaplewski, Ferguson, Milliman, 2001). Pilots, managers, and the CEO are expected to help other employees when needed. All of these practices help employees support each other while providing high quality…

Founded by the discount airline veteran David Neeleman in 2000, JetBlue Airways has quickly become one of the largest discount airlines in the United States. Starting primarily by serving the East Coast, the airline has since expanded throughout the country and entered the international market. The reasons for its early success are numerous: JetBlue entered the market with one of the largest levels of liquidity of any start-up airline; it met the needs of customers’ whose primary concerns are price and route; and it successfully defined its brand and differentiated itself from competitors by offering an above average customer experience and amenities for a discounted price. They are offering fares with the “point to point” system. JetBlue´s business-level strategy is therefore a mix of cost-leadership and differentiation. David Neeleman’s idea behind JetBlue was to start a company that combined the low fares of a discount airline carrier with the comforts of a small cozy den in people’s homes. His vision involved both business and leisure customers to have cheap and affordable flights throughout the United States and abroad on newer aircraft that are not only comfortable, but are equipped with modern entertainment options, and a customer centric business model which makes customer service a number one priority. In contrast to its competitors, for example, JetBlue offers fares up to 65% lower but added comfort features such as assigned seating, leather upholstery and satellite TV on individual screens in every seat. Moreover, they are practicing a “get-to-the-destinations-at-all-costs” culture, which makes it their declared aim never to cancel a flight. JetBlue Airways does not operate to a traditional mission statement; rather, it operates to a set of core values: Safety, Caring, Integrity, Fun, and…

Air transport has probably never been more important to the development of a new nation than in the case of Pakistan. With his singular vision and foresight, Mr. Jinnah realized that with the formation of the two wings of Pakistan, separated by 1100 miles, a swift and efficient mode of transport was imperative.…

Unlike what it was five years ago, the demands of the employees of every airline company has raised of its initial standards. As using airlines today has changed from being a luxury to a necessity, airline companies now are prospering at a much higher rate than what they used to a few years ago. It can be understood that an increased customer satisfaction in terms of both quality and quantity can take place only with an increased work delivered by the employees. This is the reason that the demands of the employees have also increased in a span of less than three years. Emirates Airlines had an advantage over other airline companies that its employees were convinced with lower salaries. Even the Indian and Pakistani expatriates were paid relatively lesser than what the other airlines paid their counterparts in western countries. Today, with the success of Emirate Airlines, this would not be feasible…
