Most of the employers that were surveyed were female and had an average age of 41 years. About forty percent of the employers were the heads of the departments and were the managers of personnel in human resource departments. Among the older workers, about forty-five percent were men and fifty-five percent were women and both genders had an average age of 52 years. One survey was for mailed interviews with employers, the other was for telephone interviews with older employees, and the final was for older retrainees. Due to the issue of age discrimination among elderly workers, the article, The Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Challenge of Population Aging, was written to show the challenges the workers faced and how the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) overcame them. The ADEA protects workers aged 40 years old and up from being discriminated in their work environment. The ADEA encourages the hiring of eldely workers who wish to be part of the work force and prevents discrimination towards them.
