Adarna Review

“Adarna”

Adarna, adarna, adarna! The best play I have watched so far. It was the first time I watched a play in UP and also my first time to see Dulaang UP perform. Before I watch the play, many of my friends who were studying in UP said that, “The best ang Dulaang UP. Sobrang galing ng mga yan.” My expectations to the Dulaang UP were achieved because of what I saw. The actors and actresses who played a character in the Ibong Adarna were all very good and striking. I felt like I was part of the whole show as they performed.
The Ibong Adarna was said to be the most popular and favorite corrido of the Filipinos. The Ibong Adarna is also the legendary bird of Piedras Platas. The bird used to sing and after it sings, the bird will poop to her victim and the victim will turn to become a stone. The play was based on the “Corrido at Buhay nang Pinagdaanan nang Tatlong Pricipeng Anak nang Haring Fernando at nang Reina Valeriana sa Cahariang Berbania”. The Adarna is believed by the people in Berbania to cure the illness of the three princes’ father. The Ibong Adarna in the play was performed by seven singing actresses to show the seven colors of the bird. Each singing girl is representing one color of the Ibong Adarna. There were also multiple actors who played the role of one character in the story for a smooth and continuous presentation. The play was really entertaining because the story had some twists and turns to make it more fun to watch. There were effects shown during the play to help the people understand more and get along with the story. What did also keep the audience’s attention was how the tropes and clichés were rendered with clever hand tricks and cut-out papers.
During my first year in high school, we were able to tackle the story of Ibong Adarna in our Filipino class. As we discuss different chapters of the story, we are imagining the story in our minds only. But to

In the novel Paradise of the Blind by Duong Thu Huong, the author uses diction from the perspective of Hang to set the foundation of the novel as well as to establish the essential element of Hang’s journey through time and space in relation to her family. Motifs are vital in the novel to draw attention to certain aspects in order to bring out the emotional experiences of Hang’s journey along with her interactions with other characters. Motifs are expressed to portray the influence of cultural aspects on Hang’s emotions and conscience. Imagery, portrayed in the novel is expressed through intense diction as the beautiful landscapes she describes is contradicted with harsh comments that reflect society. To reunite with the first play you have encountered as a theatre actor was just overwhelming, I must say. Last February 19 at 7:30pm, I witnessed a new adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama ‘’Our Town’’ of the accomplished American novelist and playwright, Thornton Wilder. The new interpretation was entitled ‘’Dito Sa Atin’’ performed by Kayumanggi Pangkat Dulaan at the Batong Malake Covered Court, adapted by Myra S. Samson and directed by Gian Carlo U. De Jesus.…

“Although the heart may care no more, the mind can always recall.” Ibrahim Jubaira started with that. The main character, Jafaar, recalled all the bittersweet memories he had with the blue blooded girl of the big astana, whom he loved a long time ago. The story tells us the life of a Muslim when this short story is written because of the different symbols used in the story like the blue blood and the big astana, the bittersweet memories of Jafaar and the appearance of the Christian Government. These symbols used in the story define the life of a Muslim in 1941 on the eve of World War II where Christians migrated to Mindanao. (“Blue Blood of the Big Astana”, 5)…

Corollary to this study, several writers perceived that Filipino folktales are stories that form part of the oral tradition in the Philippines. They have been passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth rather than by writing, and thus the stories have been modified by successive retellings before they were written down and recorded. Folktales in general include legends, fables, jokes, tall stories and fairy tales. Many of the folktales in the Philippines involve mythical creatures and magical…
