Acid Reflux or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is caused by stomach acid rise towards the esophagus and cause pain in the solar plexus or a burning sensation in the chest.
The cause of acid reflux (GERD) is the proper functioning of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). LES is a circle of muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. LES serves as the automatic door opens when food or drink down to the stomach. After the food came in, the LES will be shut down to prevent the existing food and acid in the stomach so as not to move up into the esophagus. If not, LES became loose and don't close properly, the stomach acid can get out of the stomach and cause acid reflux.
