Paul Goodman suggests that in order to counter the strict, lockstep tendencies of American educational institutions, that universities as well as secondary schools devise strategies to encourage greater flexibility, creativity and independence for the student, without which full, adult learning cannot take place. Specifically, Goodman proposes that prestigious liberal arts universities institute a new requirement: students shall engage in a “maturing” activity for two years before matriculating. Examples of “maturing” activities are “working for a living [...]; community service, [...], volunteer service in hospital or settlement house, domestic Peace Corps; the army” (Goodman). This proposal would push up the average age of the entering student and make him or her more ready for academic work, such as anthropology or the physical sciences, which are better understood with “experience and judgement” (Goodman).…

University of Chicago’s prestige is extraordinary, and its renown expands throughout our entire world. Yet this is not what makes this place so intriguing. From being immersed in one of Earth’s most dynamic cities to its philosophy of intellectual growth and global exploration, UChicago’s value goes far beyond the label as a top tier school. As I attended a UChicago visit to Bishop Watterson, I remember specifically when Mr. Kurfirst, an officer of the admissions department, said “Yes, University of Chicago is very competitive, but not in the way most people think. The students here compete in order to push each other to higher boundaries. We compete, but everyone here is in this together and our students can turn to anyone in our community”. If I want to make a positive difference in this world, no university would be more reliable in encouraging and assisting my endeavors than this institution. With the University of Chicago, political aspirations people called impossible and idealistic suddenly seem…

This week, the Attic’s high school was privileged to host Michelle Jones, President and Co-Founder of Portland, Oregon’s new progressive college, Wayfinding Academy. Although I could go on and on about this intriguing (and familiarly structured, for those of us here at the Attic!) school, what I want to focus on here is something Michelle told our kids. She left her position in traditional high education because, she said, she could envision an ideal college, and it looked different than that tradition. Alongside her colleagues and the students at Wayfinding Academy, she is now working to create that ideal.…

When the students of Lewis & Clark were commonly describing the student body as alternative, socially conscious, and creative, I knew I would fit in. I'm interested in attending Lewis & Clark College because the college and student body’s values of social responsibility are the same values that I hold throughout my daily life. Beyond the high quality and personable teaching I can receive in classes, the things I can learn from the students are invaluable. I would receive so much insight from the classrooms filled with students who are dedicated to social responsibility. Additionally, considering Lewis and Clark’s commitment to environmental sustainability, I have a few visions of how I can influence the campus. While in the Animal Collective…

The tools we learn in these classes teach us to be kind, compassionate, and nurturing to all not just as a scholar practitioner but as a human with impeccable morals and ethics. My philosophy as a scholar-practitioner is epistemology. I believe that we develop awareness from the world we live in by the way we interact within it (Blaikie, 2004). I believe we are molded and formed by what we observe or what we are exposed to during the growth of our life. I believe that it is vital to be acquainted with the world around us by being active in it, experiencing life, and gaining knowledge (Blaikie, 2004). Therefore, I think we are the future leaders of social change; we are the face of Walden University as we go out…

Healthcare administrators are the individuals who work behind the scenes to make sure the sick are able to receive the care they need. It is the administrator’s job to run and manage the healthcare organizations. Examples of these companies are the local doctor’s office, hospitals, nursing homes or home healthcare agencies. Healthcare administrators have endless opportunities but I personally think that long term care is a great option. Long term care is always growing and evolving. According to OHCA, by year 2030, 33 million people will be seniors and one in five will need some type of long-term care.…

The common lecture given by President Machen encouraged college freshman to seek the good life in college and understand why it is a requirement to take this class. Much like Beethoven creating Ode to Joy, many students have graduated from the University of Florida and have accomplished or created things that changed the world. Machen 's ideas about what the good life is and why the “What is the Good Life” course was set up exemplify the concept of a worldwide impact and brotherhood from Smith and Burricheter’s lecture on Ode to Joy.…

I have several academic and professional goals that will result in my success in a future career and in life in general. Firstly, my immediate goal is to finish high school while maintaining or improving my GPA and my class rank. My next goal is to move on to college, where I plan on having an above-average GPA in order to get accepted into my first choice four-year university where I can continue my education. I have learned that the more education a scholar receives, the greater likelihood of a more successful career there is. Because of this, my ultimate academic aspiration is to earn a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice with a concentration in International Justice. While pursuing this degree, another goal of mine is to study abroad in order to be immersed in another culture, and to see how I react when I am out of my comfort zone.…
