AP Calculus Reflective Essay
When I hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote, I think about my experience is my AP Calculus course. Up until my senior year of high school, I naturally succeeded in my math courses. In my first trimester of AP Calculus, I struggled with understanding the course material. But more importantly, my grade suffered. My first instinct was to drop the course and enroll in an easier class. I told my mom I had scheduled an appointment with the guidance counselor and I planned to enroll in the course. I was shocked by my mom’s response. I explained to her that I did not need the math course to graduate high school. But my mom still refused to let me quit. Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms.
