Abigail Williams The Crucible Analysis
In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, Abigail Williams is a stingy person who causes people to suffer because of her many lies. Abigail Williams was one of the main accusers in the Salem Witch trials. Everything started in a small Puritan Community in 1692 where there were tons of rumors and a tremendous number of people accused of being witches and being hanged when innocent. The Salem Witch Trials is about hearings and prosecutions of people who were accused of witchcraft. Abigail and other girls were found dancing in the forest in the middle of the night with Paris’s slave, Tituba. Abby denies that she and the girls engaged in witchcraft. She cared for her needs and her needs only. During the trials she would freak out and blame others that made her look innocent and people would agree with her so they wouldn’t be killed. As the leader she knows how to manipulate them very well to do what she wants. For example, Abigail claims she saw a bird blaming it as Mary Warren and got everyone to repeat what Mary said meaning she sent her spirit into a bird. She stepped back in fear as though the bird, Mary, will come down and swoop her and yells “Oh please, Mary! Don’t come down” (Act 3, line 1013).The selfishness of Abigail is demonstrated by her willingness to cause people to be hanged so she can avoid punishment for her own actions and sentence Elizabeth to death to rekindle her affair with John.
In The Crucible, 19 people were hanged, and four died in jail. All were sentenced to death for being blamed of uniting with the devil. Abigail Williams is the most responsible for the events because she is dishonest of committing adultery with Proctor, her power of getting her way with everyone on her side and her greedy personality. At the end of the trials she walked out and Paris says “My niece, sir, my niece- I believe she has vanished” (Act 4, line 143)!
