AS Language Unit Two – Creating Texts
What to do:
Candidates should choose their own writing focus to suit their individual skills and interests in consultation with their teacher(s). This should be led in centres by use of ‘style models’ to encourage candidates to experience a wide range of writing styles before the writing process begins.
In preparation for this module candidates need to study:
• the use of register and style
• characteristics of genres and sub-genres
• the impact of language choices (lexis and grammar) and discourse strategies
• the purposes and skills of planning, drafting and redrafting * the use of primary sources and of clear referencing of these materials
• Skills associated with analysing and reviewing

    Purpose, tone, audience, and content, are ideal in developing academic writing skills. Purpose is the reason for even starting to write about any topic. Often purpose will have the writer choose what kind of paper to write; whether it may be evaluation, synthesis, summary, or analysis. By developing this skill the writer can then set the tone they might want to use. By setting the tone of the paper the writer can control the mood of the paper and control how they feel about the topic. By incorporating tone in any paper, the writer can make a personal connection to the type of audience they are writing for. In connecting with the audience, the writer can evaluate and incorporate the audience’s diversity through their demographics, education level, prior knowledge, and expectations on the paper being written.     After reading the article “The Composing Processes of Unskilled College Writers” by Sondra Perl I have been forced to understand how writers write. The writing process is a situation that is approached from various angles. In the writing process techniques and sequences from person to person are often diverse, but it is one of the ways one may be expressed. The goal of Perl study was to “see how unskilled writers write, can their writing process be analyzed in a systematic, replicable manner, and what does an increased understanding of their process suggest about nature of composing in general and the manner in which writing is taught in schools.” (191) With Perl performing this observation and collecting several amounts of data I decided to perform an observation on my writing by paying close attention to how I write.
