IB T.O.K. Journal #1 Assumptions

Statement “Human beings are unaware of their assumptions, much like fish are unaware of the water they live in”

A Great king of Montenegro, Sir Njegoš, once stated that the biggest secret in this world is what does a man truly think. We consider ourselves as a dominating species on this planet; we believe that the knowledge we have created and teach is the knowledge that is, so to speak correct. However human’s can be unaware that their knowledge can only be an assumption. This is why I agree with the statement that is hypothesized above. In this world different people have different assumptions. For example Communism and Capitalism were to the main political views throughout the mid to late 20th century each with their own view to the world. This pro-communist New Zealander writer, Mick Costello wrote, “It is not “human nature” that is the cause of the problems people face today. It is the way society is organized, with a minority of people owning and controlling the wealth.”
He believed that communism meant equality to all people. However this is only an assumption (due to various factors) and he is not aware of it because truthfully he has never lived in a communist country (personal experience) and can’t really say that communism is truly beneficial towards people. The 2nd half of the title is an example of humans making assumptions. This person states that fish are unaware of their surrounding yet this is only an assumption but he believes it to be knowledge just by gut feeling and appearance. However, scientists may answer to this statement differently. Scientists had scientific assumptions (such as Isaac Newton on gravity) known as theories. This meaning that it is only an assumption and could be incorrect which gives a contradicting claim to this journal that humans can be aware of their assumptions. These scientists were aware of their assumption and

People’s perceptions often cloud their judgments. As one lives his life, he notices the character of people and naturally tends to associate their character with a generalized group that they belong to. For example, one may have noticed that a tall man is good at basketball because he sees tall men play on professional basketball teams. He then assumes that tall men are naturally good at basketball and therefore tall men must play basketball. This generalization is untrue however because there are many tall men who are not skilled at basketball and therefore would prove his generalization incorrect. The misperceptions that we naturally have need to be analyzed thoroughly because it is nearly impossible to accurately generalize a whole group of people.…

In order to avoid making assumptions in your thinking, you must gain control of your thinking. We must identify inferences and assumptions in order to see what inferences are illogical when the assumptions that lead to them are not justifiable. Once you become skilled in identifying the inferences and assumptions you are in a better position to question the extent to which any of your assumptions are justified. The key is recognizing and questioning our inferences and assumptions.…

Maps never accurately demonstrate the world scientifically. Instead, it serves as more of a perceived notion of territorial borders and power. Any given map is subject to bias in regards to detail and size depending on where it was created. A country with multiple islands and curvy topography essentially pay more attention to the detail and accuracy of that region, as opposed to an equally detailed country on the other side of the world. Nationalism incidentally causes any given country to assume, or even unconsciously, place their country at the center of their map, or even enlarge its size, due to the fact that they have so much pride and honor in possessing that particular nationality. It's not necessarily ignorance or lack of knowledge that causes this occurrence, but more of heightened focus on their own area.…

What is heritage? This is a question that begins to wander through one’s mind in Alice Walker’s Everyday Use. Although, it seems like a pretty generic answer, one sees that through this story that there are different meanings to people. Everyday Use is a story that follows a mom and her two daughters Maggie and Dee otherwise known as “Wangero.” It goes through these lives to share with the reader how people can completely abandon their past or ways of living as a child and then after growing up decide to completely praise those ways. Although, one thing still remains which is what does heritage mean to certain people and how does one preserve it.…

As a GCU student in the class UNV 103, prioritizing is very significant for me because without it I would not be able to complete my assignments on time. I begin my week with reading the assignments and answering the discussion forum questions. Next, I usually reply to other peoples posts throughout the week. I will start writing the journal entries and completing the assignments that are due for the week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Finally, I read my work over before I finally submit my assignments for the week. After a hard day of work I come home and complete my assignments first, and then I complete any other chores that I have to do.…

This essay will attempt to show that the title claim is correct. In order to do this an analysis will be made to show how ways of knowing such as sense perception, emotion and reason have an impact on how the knower perceives reality and the world. This task will be carried out while taking into account the areas of knowledge and analyzing the way that humans produce their claims. Cultural views, past experiences and authority affect the way individuals create opinions and understand “new” things in their surroundings and the world at large. Although two people may see things similarly, the understanding and value of the object will be completely different. This is why most of the time we do not understand ‘something’ in itself; instead, we see and understand ‘it’ as we are.…
