S Subject The “hard working” mentality
T Theme Society must give up the belief of hard work that we acquired from the Puritan era to live a true, happy, and fulfilling life.
A Attitude concern, informational, reflective (Tone)
A Audience The working class
R Rhetorical Rhetorical question- “How can you despise ease and laziness then Strategy not feel guilty when you take a rest?” (Anxiety Culture: The Puritan Work Ethic)
Commentary In the magazine article, “Anxiety Culture: The Puritan Work Ethic,” by Brian Dean, he uses the rhetorical question “How can you despise ease and laziness then not feel guilty when you take a rest?” to allow the readers to answer the question in their mind and get them thinking about the topic. The reader gets the point of the article clearly by answering the question in their heads without the author having to state it directly. Brian Dean leads the reader, with this rhetorical question, to realize that we all have something inside of us that keeps us from slowing down and relaxing. Then, Dean goes on to explain why we do have these beliefs and what is programmed inside of us to believe it is right.

I tried the challenge given by the author and failed very quickly! I only could do it for approximately 1 hour and 48 minutes. When I was just laying there doing nothing, I felt this flood of remorse, and I could not stop thinking about all the things I should be doing instead of this. It was also really hard for my mom, because I help her around the house and by each minute she became increasingly annoyed. I agree with the article that we are programmed not to relax, and to constantly be occupying ourselves with work. It was one of the hardest things to do.

Costica Bradatan, in his essay “Why Try Anything? A Meditation on Procrastination” (09.18.2016), suggests that procrastination is the result of “an anxiety of creation,” and that a procrastinator’s inaction is the result of being, “smitten by the perfect picture of that which is yet to be born.” Bradatan supports this claim by aligning the act of procrastination with a series of examples – historical (an anecdote about a mosque architect who, at thought of his design decaying with time, couldn’t bare to have his creation built), religious (early Gnostics who believed “the highest attribute of divinity is in its inexistence”), and philosophical (E.M. Cioran who believed “the catastrophe of birth” is worse than death). Bradatan’s purpose is…

In “Depressingly Easy,” Kelly Lambert argues that modern rates of depression are directly linked to a lack of hard work. Lambert began questioning the reason behind the increase in depression when reading a book to her daughter about Laura Ingalls Wilder. Compared to the time of Laura Ingalls, advancements in technology have decreased the amount of hard work needed by individuals. However, Lambert argues that work provides necessary “effort-driven rewards” for the brain (3). Lambert describes these rewards as a neurological response that stimulates the release of “feel good” neurochemicals upon completing a complex task. The nucleus accumbens, the pleasure center of the brain, controls this response as well as the brain’s motor system and emotion…

On the other hand, bad-organised people who haven’t any motivation may use this approach for doing nothing. For example, when I had a big task of homework I decided to do it at a library because when I had begun to do it in my hostel I found out that I was sleeping, eating and surfing on the Internet a lot. That’s why I understand now that if I want a good result I should work in less convenient condition than I have at…

During the month of October, my classmates and I undertook the thirty-day challenge, where we had to create a specific goal and we had to keep track of our accomplishments daily. The goal that I chose as my final one was to meditate at least five minutes daily to decrease the stress that I would face during the school year. I felt that this was very simple to achieve. With schoolwork and other extracurricular activities, I wanted to set apart some time for myself every day. Thus, I started from a smaller time interval, hoping to alter the time set based on my progress. At first I was apprehensive since I knew that I was likely to not do well with this challenge because I tend to get off track with goals very easily. However, I encouraged myself…

It is believed that if someone works as hard as possible, it will prove the “worthiness” of a person. This mindset was formed by a group of English Protestants called the Puritans in the 16th and 17th centuries. They found out that the necessity for hard work is needed for success. On the other hand, people who are lazy will never succeed, as there are no shortcuts to success in life. I used to be stuck in this “laziness” mindset, and I know it is hard to…

In America many people are faced with the inability to relax. According to Elizabeth Gilbert Americans are overstressed and are unable to relax and enjoy life. Even if they went on a vacation they would not be capable of relaxing. Some people will argue that not all Americans are stressed to the point they are unable to relax. The reason is Americans are viewed as having better lives than people who live in foreign country’s. Americans are in fact faced with many problems such as the daily demands and pressures that lead to people feeling tired because they lose energy resulting in Americans not being able to relax because of demands such as personal relationships, accumulation of goods, and competition.…

One of the biggest reasons why many people fail to accomplish all they want to accomplish is because they don't let others help them. "Nobody can do it better than me" or "I need to do this myself" will cause a lot of stress because let's face it, you only have 24 hours in your day and only 2 hands. Try to delegate tasks that can be done just as well or even…

I discovered I need to use my time more effectively. Working five days a week from 5am-5pm can wear on a person’s body as well as their mind. I manage my time by doing things in thirty minute increments by doing this I have concluded that I process more. I take frequent breaks and I reward myself to a cup of coffee daily. I have my plans already scheduled for Monday-Friday which includes mean preparation, chores and spending time studying. I also involve my family and friends, whether it is to hold me accountable or to pray for…

Considering the nature of activity, if it is difficult to perform then a lot of cognitive effort will be required and vice versa. According to Broadbent (1958), the amount of information that can be attended to at anytime is limited, if the amount exceeds our cognitive resources capacity, an attention filter is brought in that allow some information in whereas the rest are blocked. Thus, we make little meaning out of blocked information. This filter saves us from information overload when there is too much information to process. Treisman (1960) also explained this using the attenuation theory of attention. This theory postulates that the volume of the unattended information is turned down and we can make meaning out of them because they might still be…

When I started high school, I felt overwhelmed by classwork and decided that ignoring this stress was the solution. I would sleep in class, use my phone in class, and read a comic book in class: anything to distract me from learning. In the beginning of that October, I remember drifting into a stupor and scrolling on the mouse for eternity, reading titles of boring books that suited my reading assignment. I had two minutes left in class to select a book for an independent reading project. I set a five-second-timer in my head and furiously scrolled past books that my peers would choose in a heartbeat. With time running out I chose the first book that peaked my interest and emailed it to my teacher. Little did I know how much Mindful Work: How Meditation Is Changing Business from the Inside Out by David Gelles would change my life.…
