Reflective Piece
When I arrive on shift I firstly greet the guests, ensuring I speak to each person individualIy and ask how their night was. I feel this is important within my role to have a visual presence on the floor with the guests and for them to know me well enough to feel comfortable in speaking to me about anything they wish. I have a good rapport built up with guests from my hands on work with them in the past. I do feel more time spent chatting with guests would improve this further and keep this in mind throughout my day.
I then use the sign in book to document my attendance. The importance of this is imperative for fire regulations, company policy and for calculating hours worked for the returns and pay at the end of the month. I personally find reviewing the sign in book and rota useful as I am able to see which of the staff team have signed in and are on shift today. I am able to evaluate the relative strengths and any possible weaknesses of the staff available and plan activities and tasks accordingly.
I then delegate one nightshift the task of ensuring the wellbeing of the guests whilst we complete handover in the office. This ensures guests safety is upheld whilst day staff are gathering required information to inform their practice for their shift.
As senior on shift delegation of tasks is a key aspect of my job role in order to ensure all required tasks are completed and staff are given opportunity to practice aspects of their role they lack confidence or skill in in a safe and supportive setting.
I am aware one staff member has low confidence levels in completion of handovers and have discussed this with her in supervsion in the past. Together we had decided she would take the lead in handovers as much as possible in order for her to gather experience when I am there to offer support. The handover is positive and completed to a high standard. Afterwards I am able to boost Her confidence a little by informing her she had come across as confident and

Delegation is defined as the transfer of responsibility for the performance of an activity from one individual to another individual. The purpose of delegation is designed to provide overarching principles and guidelines for practice situations where registered nurses delegate tasks safely to other medical teams such as LPNs (Licensed Practical Nurses), CNAs(Certified Nursing Assistants) or other unlicensed personnel (Hansten & Jackson, 2009). There is more nursing to do than nurses can handle and this is where good delegation can relieve some of the burden while working together for good patient outcomes. Delegating is a process that can result in safe and effective nursing care if used appropriately. The benefit of delegation within the nurse’s realm is the ability for the nurse to attend to more complex and/or a multitude of patient care needs.…

Also it is important to know the policies and procedure of the place you are employed and to know the job description and expectations of the person of which you are delegating tasks to (Hansten & Jackson p. 3-4).…

In the healthcare profession it is important for all staff members to work together to accomplish goals and care for patients. When working together many staff members have the authority to make assignments and delegate tasks to others to aid in accomplishing goals and to take care of patients. It is important for nurses to understand their role in delegation whether they are the nurse manager, supervisor, or staff nurse. They all have some type of authority to delegate tasks to other nurses or UAPs. It is also important for nurses and UAPs to have a thorough understanding of their participation in the delegation process as well as their responsibility and accountability.
