Mathematics Autobiography Assignment
My name is Casey Nicole Layton, and I am nineteen years of age. I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 20th, 1995. My parents used to call me an ice princess when I was little, and they always told me the same story when I’d ask how I had acquired that name. When they tried to bring me home from the hospital, we got stuck in the family car during a huge blizzard and the winter chill got to me, and they used this fairytale-like story to explain my nickname, as well as why my hands and feet were always cold. I am the third born out of six children. When I am not attending IUP, I live with my mum in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, with my step-dad and half siblings. At home we currently have 6 lizards, 5 cats, 3 dogs, and a bunny. In my spare time I breed snakes for a living with my mum, and we currently have over 50 snakes taking over our dining room. When I’m not doing that, I enjoy photography, painting, and crafting. Naturally, I am a busy-body who enjoys working hard and spending time with my family.
Math has always been a sensitive subject for me. I graduated from Fox Chapel High School, and the furthest I went in mathematics was Algebra II. I can remember in Middle School I had to take Pre-Geometry over again because I failed the first time. I would say as a consensus, I have always had trouble communicating with my teachers. My first Pre-Geometry teacher spent most of class trying to discipline the troublesome students instead of teaching, and I was deprived of my time and was confused in regards to the material. When I would approach this teacher, she would be so flustered from the class’s events, that she would dismiss me with just a “crash course”. Most of my math teachers have been like that. They would have you read the book, do the questions, and in class they would review what we did for homework. I do not work well with the whole “self-taught” method of teaching, and I often had to stay after class. I struggled, I complained, and I felt as though that I never really learned anything from my teachers. I was the one who had to ask a million questions because I didn’t fully grasp the materials in the book, or the examples on the board. I would love to have a quiet, enthusiastic environment, and have a teacher who I can connect with. Math is one of my least favorite subjects, and I know this because I’ve always had bad experiences in the class room. My ultimate goal is to walk away from Math 101 and have full knowledge of what the course entails, as well as feel like I got my money’s worth.
My future is bright and hopeful. I am an Art Education major, and I love every aspect of art. Art is everywhere; it is the chair you sit on, the cup you drink from, and the roof over your head. When I graduate, I want to be able to teach future generations the importance of art, and help inspire my students to follow their passions and dreams. Beyond college, it is my goal to be a lifelong learner, and to have the availability to teach the subject I enjoy most, art!

One thing that I think that sets me apart from other candidates applying to the University of California is that I put my heart and soul on every assignment, projects and exam. I work hard and put time on the assignment, projects and exam. I also give my full effort. Whenever I give my heart and soul on the assignment or projects, I am able to learn more than I should learn. I was able to discover new facts that I did not know. For example, in my Pre Calculus class, we did a project about global warming. I have to research about global warming and predict total population, average temperature, carbon dioxide emission in the next 50 and 100 years from now. I took my time and read articles about global warming. While looking at the statistic, I was asking myself what is cause of increasing population, temperature, and carbon dioxide emission. I realize those three factors are causing global warming. I made sure that I did the math correctly. I also made sure that I explained the definition, cause, and effect of the global warming. I gave my heart and soul by giving my best effort and making sure my data and information…

In general, I would describe my ability in math as average. I did well in elementary, but middle school was when I started having difficulties. When I took math I, I mostly got B’s and C’s on my tests, because I had a hard time understanding the material, or asking the teacher if I needed help with a certain concept. Overall, I think my average grade for math would be a B, but I would like to improve this year and get an A for a final grade. My parents definitely contributed to my overall success. If I didn’t have their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I disliked learning trigonometry and graphing functions. I took math II online, so I wasn’t able to really use a worksheet and graph any problems for myself. I liked the substitution…

My life started with my long and hard birth on July 14, 1993. I came into the world with a large scream and was immediately placed into some sort of category. The doctors and nurses took a quick look at me, and pronounced me as a girl. This social label of being a girl was now my gender, which is something I had no say in. Every since that very moment in time where my parents were told I was a girl, I have been treated according to my gender. This meant that my parents automatically dressed me in pink, bought me dollhouses and kitchen sets and threw me Barbie themed birthday parties. Since I was surrounded my whole entire life by these things, it was almost like second nature to think and act the way that I did and still do. My socialization skills, which to put simply are the accepted ways in society to behave or how I express myself, have all been shaped by the fact that I am a female. The socialization process is how we learn to act or to follow norms along with what to believe. There have been many agents of socialization in my life, which are the people and types of situations that teach us as human beings how to act and can shape your personality which I’m going to describe.…
