“Slaveship,” by Lucille Clifton, is a free verse poem from the perspective of slaves that the white men capture and trade in the slave trade, forcing them to travel on the Middle Passage. Ironically, the ships bear the names of religious symbols and figures such as Jesus, Angel of God, and Grace of God (lines 14-15) even though the act of slavery is one of the most sinful systems in the eyes of these slaves and in the eyes of all decent human beings.…

My parents had lived in Illinois their whole life and grew up there so when we moved back to Illinois it was basically saying that we were just going home. My name was chosen by my mom because she said that Danielle was one of her favorite girl names. She also said that one of her good friends name is Danielle and my mom told her that she was gonna name me after her. A couple days after I was born is when the first ever school shooting happened at Columbine High School in 1999 in Colorado. I share a birthday with Kassidy Steffen and Colleen Daniels. The first couple years of my life I honestly do not remember. My mom has told me stories about when I was a baby. When I was little I loved to help out and do whatever my mom was doing. From doing the dishes to making cookies I was there to help out. My mom told me that I was a momma's girl. I always cried when my mom left to go to work. I also had a big imagination and always like to…

Hey, I am born in Los Santos, Idlewood the 12 /05/ 1997 in All saints hospital. I've been growing up with both parents and my older brother in a safe home and parents that took care of me and never made me worried about anything. I past my High School with a lot of A's. I never got into trouble in my High School years, but it all went wrong when I moved away from my home. I moved to a little apartment in the market, not that long away from where I grew up. But it was different.Graffiti and gunshots were a part of everyday and every night too. I didn't really have any friends from High School because they all moved to other countries or cities, so I started on the streets. I met a guy named Johnny, who took me under his arms and took care of…

My life started on December 13, 1999 In Ahoskie, North Carolina. I was born at 12 p.m. As my family would tell it was a very different day for everyone. I was my mom’s first born child and the same for my dad. I really don’t remember much about my childhood. The furthest back I remember is like 4th grade way back when I made my mother proud. I had straight A’s and I never had a single write up. I always tried to do the best I could to get through the years and I did well until the sixth grade.…

I was born on March 26, 2001. I was delivered by Dr. Deborah in Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa. After a lot of debate, my father gave me the name Jashawn. None of the of the family on my mom’s side liked my name. My father probably got the idea of Jashawn from one of my older cousins, who has the name Dashawn. Later on, his cousin named her son Tyshawn, and I also have a cousin named Kashawn. So, as you can tell, my dad and his family are very original. My mom left my dad, who was an abusive drug addict, constantly in and out of jail. I never really had a particular home that I grew up in, because my mom was always finding houses that she liked better than the house we were in at the moment. My most prominent memories came from an apartment downtown, a block or so from the police department.…

My past is Spain. Spain is the country where I was born and I grew up. It is where my family and most of my friends live. I spent fourteen years in a catholic school. I also loved sports, so I used to play for Real Madrid soccer team when I was a kid. Once I finished school, I served one year at the Army as at that time the Military Service was mandatory. Then, I started to work for an insurance company. That company allowed me to attend a specialized program in insurance. Though, insurance was interesting, I moved to the Sales Department that was more active. When I was twenty-three years-old I realized that technology and computers were my passion and started to work in an IT Department.…

Who am I? That is a good question. I guess I really never stop to think about it. Most people are defined by their family or their career. For example, if I were to ask "who is Barack H. Obama?" most people would say that he is the president of the United States. If you asked about any-one, they would usually explain who the person is by what they do or who their family is. So if you want to know that, well, I am a senior at Milford High School, I am the daughter of Eric and Pam B....and I am 17 years old. My real name is Sam, but most people would call me “Sam” or “Sammie”. I was born in the United States of America and lived with my grandmother. My grandmother would look at me as a beautiful young lady because I have grown up from a little…

I was born November 5, 1997, in San Pablo, California. My mother, Chablis, and father, Damon, never got along after my birth. Till this day my father isn’t in my life. My mother has always taken care of me and my other five siblings as we lived in Richmond, California at the time. As far as I can remember my childhood was amazing. Spending time with my family, enjoying the days as they passed was amazing. Having five other siblings didn’t always mean fun and excitement 24/7. There were times where we didn’t fancy each other’s company. I can remember the best time we had with each other, it was about seven years ago, December 25, Christmas was great that year. There were an abundance of gifts for and from everyone. We played with the toys for hours, all day long. That was the first time when it was one day of happiness that lasted the entire day.…

I was born in Denver, Colorado on one of the best days of the year – JUNE 18th. Nothing special – ony my birth date. Shortly after my parents married, my father decided that he wanted to attend the University of Colorado in Denver for graduate school. I lived in Denver for the first five years of my life and what I can remember the most about it is THE SNOW!!! And mountains everywhere! I really enjoyed playing in the snow during my Denver days! We had a really HUGE back and side yard. It just seemed like a great adventure every time. My mother would help me get dressed up in my little snowsuit and would rub a hand full of Vaseline over my face. I had one other sibling – my brother Darein and he was only 18 months younger that I. HE WAS THE BIGGEST SCARY CAT EVER!!! He would never come and play in the snow with me. He would just watch me from inside the house. Staring from the kitchen window.…

My name is Kyle and I was born on August 11, 1994 in San Ramon, California. I spent the first five years of my life in San Ramon, where I went to preschool and made many new friends. Then, in November of 1999, me and my family, which consists of 2 younger sisters, Karli and Haley, 1 younger brother, Jake (who hadn't been born yet), and my mom and dad. The reason for the move was to be closer to family, since many of our relatives lived in Sacramento, and since it would be the perfect time with me just starting kindergarten and all of my siblings still too young for preschool. After arriving in Sacramento, we spent the first few weeks staying at my grandparents house as we began looking for a house. My dad stayed back in San Ramon for a little bit as we sold the house and he still had his work in Walnut Creek, where he continues to work today as a doctor in internal medicine. My mom got a job at Bel Air as a pharmacist. After everything was figured out and we finally settled into our new house, I began my adventure into a new life. I started kindergarten at Matsuyama Elementary School and so began my elementary school life. I was extremely nervous about going to a new school where i new nobody and was very shy on the first day that i got there. I eventually…

The sun shined on my face and I opened my eyes. It was my first time waking up in the new town and everything felt so awkward. I moved from my home town Watsonville CA to another little town not that far but very different called Hollister CA .I felt like going out and do the everyday stuff I used to do go to like go to a little bakery that was next to the house where I used to live. When I went outside everything was different it felt like if I was in a different world. Some of the difficult things were adapting for example, when we wanted to go to a store we had to search where they were located and carefully find them so we could find our way back home. The first day was the hardest day of a lot to come. I missed my old town and felt like I didn’t belong to the new place. I lived in my home town for 13 years so I missed every little thing about it. I wanted to move back where I felt home was I felt everything was not the same and in my eyes everything was ugly in my new home. I became depressed and despreate to move back to my home town but my parents did not pay attention to me I was a 14 years old.…

    1. Childhood is an amazing time in life. There were the good and bad experiences while others were scary. Thinking back, reflecting and reliving those moments made me realize I had and an amazing childhood. It feels like just yesterday, I was running around playing hide-and-seek with the wind blowing through my little ponytails. There were many games I recall loving as a child. Ring around the Rosie, ludo, hopscotch and many more. I was hyper and excited for those always. I recall most children from the neighbourhood would gather at the park and we ran around like crazy just to have fun. Looking back at that moment I don’t know what we were thinking! My most enjoyable childhood moments would be between myself and two other friends named Faraz and Anjo. I use to have a medium size red toy truck made out of metal. Anjo and I would site on the truck, and get Faraz a chubby boy to push us round the neighbourhood. Some of my other friends from school would come over on weekends and we would play dollhouse on the deck. Anjo and I had so many good times together, even sitting together on one bike, riding around the block until we both fall and got injury. I can recall one time Anjo was sleeping over at my house, and at midnight she started to cry to go home. My father had to drop her home and the next day I mocked at her a lot. My awful experience was when a boy next door stole my red truck. I was very sad, I cried and cried until my mom got it back from him.…
