Fundamentals and principles of major manufacturing processes: casting, bulk deformation, sheet metalworking, powder metallurgy. Processing of polymers, ceramics, glass, rubber and composites. Metal cutting: cutting conditions, forces, temperatures, tool life, surface finish, coolants. Cutting tool materials. Principles, tools and process capabilities of basic machining operations: turning, milling, drilling, planning, shaping, boring, broaching. Gear manufacturing. Abrasive operations: grinding, finishing operations. Non-traditional processes. Basics of joining and assembling. Fusion and solid-state welding. Essentials of computer numerical control. Course Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course, student must be able to

(1) Understand mechanical properties of materials and their applications in manufacturing processes (2) Prepare a pattern and perform the casting and understand its various types along with respective benefits and limitations

(3) Analyze and understand the mechanism the different forming processes, including bulk forming and sheet metal forming
(4) Study and learn mechanism and significance of Powder Metallurgy and its applicability in manufacturing domain
(5) Understand the processing and/or manufacturing techniques of nonmetals, like ceramics and polymers
(6) Gain a comprehensive apprehension of metal cutting processes, mechanics of machining, performance measures, and tooling and cutting parameters
(7) Learn the fundamentals of assembly fits and permanent joining techniques (8) Gain a know-how of nontraditional manufacturing processes and abrasive processes (9) Learn the mechanism of CNC system and programming techniques Method
