arly Childhood Development: Psychoanalytic Theory, Contextual Theory, & Cognitive Theory
There are five main perspectives to human development; Psychoanalytic, Learning, Cognitive, Evolutionary/Sociobiological and Contextual. In this paper we will compare and contrast three of these developmental theories, the Psychoanalytic, Contextual and Cognitive. We will show how each theory has added to the knowledge we have of child development. We will also examines how, by using the knowledge that has been gained from these theories, parents and educators alike, have been able to be more informed of the needs of children and their ability to reach higher goals.
According to Freud, three aspects of early childhood development are the developing of the ego, id and superego in resolving the conflicts during early childhood stages: the oral stage, anal stage and phallic stages of development including the Oedipus complex (Quigley, Psychoanalysis). This is what is known as the Psychoanalytic theory of human development. Generally, the personality develops through the structures of the mind and into three parts with separate motivations; ID, the emotional and irrational part of the brain; the Ego the mostly rational part of the brain; and the Superego the part of the brain that brings morality to the table. Freud believed that a psychic energy was required for movement through the stages (Neil, Major Themes) Freud claimed that all human beings are born with certain instincts, i.e. with a natural tendency to satisfy their biologically determined needs for food, shelter and warmth that are both practical and a source of pleasure which Freud refers to as "sexual". For instance, when the infant, sucking at its mother's breast discovers the pleasure inherent in this activity, the first glimmers of sexuality are awakened.     The ‘father’ of psychoanalytic approach is Sigmund Freud. Freud believed that human personality has a structure and develops over time. He proposed three parts: the id – in which the libido (an instinctual sexual drive) is centered; the ego – a much more conscious element that serves as the executive of the personality; and the superego – the center of conscience and morality, incorporating the norms and moral structures of family and society. In Freud’s theory, these three parts are not all present at birth. The infant and toddler is all id, all instinct, without the influence of the ego or the superego. The ego begins to develop in the years from age 2 to about 4, as the child learns to adapt some individual behaviours. Finally, the superego begins to develop before school age, as the child incorporates the parents’ values and cultural traditions. Freud also proposed the stages of psychosexual development. In each stage the libido is invested in that part of the body that is the most sensitive at that age. In a newborn the mouth, lips and tongue are the most sensitive parts of the body. The stage is therefore called oral stage.     Sharon is a 6 month, 185 lbs. healthy woman. She presents with no problems during the pregnancy. She is concern with exercise that will help in the development of her baby and keep her healthy though out the duration of her pregnancy. The plan that I have suggested for her would include walking, swimming, and low pressure aerobics or yoga. All of these exercise will not only benefit her baby but also benefit her as well. Walking was one of the exercises that was suggested. Simply walking 1 to 2 miles per day or something as counting your steps can improve the circulation in the body, increase the cardio system as well as keep her in shape during the pregnancy. This will also aid the delivery process, it allows Mother Nature to do her thing and shift the baby in the downward position for birth. It will aid in making the laboring process easier for some mother and some it will not. The walking keeps the mother fit and healthy during and after having the baby. Swimming is another relaxing exercise that was suggested to the mother. When the body is under water it feels weightless and therefore giving some women a lift off on some well need places on her body during this time. Performing simple strokes with the arms and legs is good for the circulation that many women suffer from during pregnancy. The need for some women to get the feeling that the weight has been lifted if only for a few minutes is a great relief both physical and mentally to expecting mothers. Also using the arms and legs is also good on the cardio system as well. Other simple exercises that can be used are low pressure aerobics and or yoga. Exercise such as these are good for stretching the muscles that will be used in the laboring process.…

    Freud believed that we should never underestimate what goes on in the psyche of a young child because it will show how that child will shape himself as an adult. He observes that from infancy to age six, the child goes through developmental stages, in which the child experiences conflicts with his parents. For Freud, the source of this conflict is sex, but Becker points out that it is the child's struggle to reestablish his heroism. Becker, using the existential dilemma, interprets the first stage, called the oral stage, as the stage of total narcissism. The infant leads a thoroughly symbolic existence and is not yet aware of his body's limitations. Freud calls the next stage the anal stage, where the child could develop mechanisms called anal character traits, which is an indication that he is tremendously determined to avoid any life threats.     Early childhood is full of lots of small triumphs and rapid growth. The movie we watched in class showed us several different scenarios and in which small children discover that they can affect their world. In an experiment done by Emperor Fredrick II over 700 years ago, humans discovered the importance of interaction between a care giver and child. The Emperor had several babies grow in such a way that their caregivers simply fed and changed them. The caregivers were told not to speak or show affection to the infants. The Emperor was trying to figure out which language these babies would learn to speak. What he discovered instead was that the children would soon die without the love and affection they need to survive. Later experiments show how sad and dejected babies can easily become when their parents or caregivers do not make eye contact and soothe them.
