Pre-linguistic stage is approximately from birth to 1 year. Intellectual and Development
Birth - 4 weeks May be able to lift head for a few seconds. Looks at Mum when feeding.
They look at bright lights, and can follow parent’s face using their eyes. There is no language communication other than crying to indicate hunger, pain or comforting. Will blink in reaction to a bright light. Will cry when hungry etc
1 Month Can briefly hold their head when in upright position. Can look from side to side and also make a fist.
Needs to feel calm and safe and have a routine.
Crying is a normal occurrence and their way of communicating if they need feeding, are wet or unwell. They start to recognize familiar voices and look towards where the sound is coming from.. Stares at parent/carer when being fed and will smile when being spoken to.
3 Months They look at their hands and feet, and can put weight onto their arms and legs.
Is more settled and into a routine. Will smile, frown, gurgle and make cooing noises.
Smiles when recognizing a familiar face. .When in their own company will happily vocalize their voices and make different gurgling sounds. Follows movements of a person around a room.
6 Months Rolls over, able to bear a large amount of body weight when standing upright. And is able to sit unsupported. Shows resistance when not happy.
Can be soothed with a familiar person, toy or thumb. . Will coo and attempt to imitate sounds made by parents/carers. Will chuckle/laugh when familiar voices are talking to them Will reach and grab thing within a small proximity.
9 Months Starts to crawl by pulling themselves onto their hands and knees with a rocking motion.
Enjoys attention, and wants to interact with other babies and objects around them. Will begin to say limited words like, mumma or dada.
