From Failure to Success Since its inception in 1976, Apple Inc. has been largely successful and has experienced incredible expansion. Technological innovation, appealing product lines, and a focus on superior customer service have all contributed significantly to the growth that Apple has enjoyed over the years. Even the strongest companies experience major missteps as seen by Apple’s Power Mac PC supply chain disaster of 1995. Despite the detrimental consequences at the time, this disaster led to an increased focus on supply chain management which has positively impacted Apple’s operations and has helped facilitate Apple’s subsequent successes. Two years prior to the launch of the Power Mac PC, Apple overestimated the demand for a similar product called the Power Book Laptop, leaving them with an inventory surplus. This overly optimistic demand forecast for the Power Book Laptop resulted in high product and inventory costs. For this reason, Apple decided to take a more conservative approach in forecasting the demand for the Power Mac PC. This proved to be costly when the popularity of the Power Mac PC shattered expectations. The demand during the Christmas season proved to be far too high to satisfy, forcing Apple to put customer orders on backlog. The value of the order backlog eventually reached over one billion dollars and customers reported wait times of up to two months. There were a number of errors in Apple’s supply chain and operations planning that contributed to this disaster. One of the first and most obvious errors was in Apple’s demand forecasting process. Basing production strategies primarily on the demand for a previous product was far too simplistic of an approach, despite any similarities of the two. To provide a more accurate understanding of potential demand, a firm must consider financial trends, an in-depth market analysis, the competitive environment, and product differentiation. Instead, Apple took a highly subjective and

Despite the effects of ongoing poor economic conditions in the United States, Apple Inc. celebrated record quarterly revenues and profits during its third quarter of 2011, which resulted in its stock price catapulting to a level that made it the world’s most valuable company as measured by market capitalization. The record growth in revenues and profits came primarily from volume increases in the sale of iPhones and iPads, which increased by 142 percent and 183 percent, respectively, from the same period in 2010. The sales of Mac computers increased by 14 percent from the third quarter of 2010 to reach a record 3.95 million units. The only sales disappointment for the company was a 20 percent year-over-year decline in iPod sales. The company sold 7.54 million iPods during the third quarter of 2011 compared to 9.41 million units during the third quarter of 2010. The biggest disappointment for Apple shareholders and employees was the August 24, 2011 resignation of Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs had battled a variety of heath issues including pancreatic cancer since 2004 and had had taken medical leaves of C9-1…

Apple’s golden years were marked between 1986-1991 because of the company’s ability to manufacture both hardware and software. In this way, Apple was able to control all aspects of its computers, offering a complete desktop solution that allowed customers to “plug and play.” Huge profitability in this industry in the last 20 years came as a result of strategic manufacturing solutions along with the ability to manufacture and sell integrated and complicated systems. In this way, computer manufacturers are able to obtain huge profits because they are able to change premium prices, thus cornering global market shares. For example, the Apple I series, by 1990, was selling well in the education market and the Mac dominated the desktop publishing segment, generating high profitability margins.…

This review concludes that despite Donna Dubinsky’s stellar education as a Yale graduate and a Harvard MBA she completely mishandled the entire situation from beginning to end. Ms. Dubinsky’s enjoyed a rapid and well deserved career path to become Apple Computer’s Director of Distribution and Sales Administration. She was regarded as an excellent manager who “projects a lot of confidence and conviction in her beliefs.” However, when Steve Jobs was lobbying for the existing distribution system to be eliminated and replaced by a “just-in-time” method, Ms. Dubinsky reacted uncharacteristically and did not rely on the skills and techniques learned in her Ivy League education.…

Jobs proposed that the current distribution system of Apple be changed radically. He wanted to have a direct contact between the dealer and the manufacturing plants. This is totally different from the current distribution setup in the company where the dealers¡¯ requirements are fulfilled by the company¡¯s distribution centers. Jobs proposal would have totally eliminated the distribution centers in favor of a more fancied ¡°Just in Time¡± (JIT) technique. This proposed change was not only radical, but also quite unexpected for the middle managers of the company. The fundamental areas and people that this change would impact, had many questions, concerns, and possible objections. This a problem because as an organization, Apple should operate with effective communication processes, effective team efforts,…

The company started off as “Apple Computer,” best known for its Macintosh personal computers (PCs) in the 1980’s and 1990’s. Despite a strong brand, rapid growth, and high profits in the late 1980s, Apple almost went bankrupt in 1996. Then Jobs went to work, transforming “Apple Computer” into “Apple Inc.” with innovative non-PC products starting in the early 2000’s. In fact, by 2010, the company viewed itself as a “mobile device company.” In the 2009 fiscal year, sales related to the iPhone and the iPod represented nearly 60% of Apple’s total sales of $43 billion. Even in the midst of a severe economic recession, revenues and net income both soared (Yoffie D.B. , Kim R. 2011).…

Apple has been established for over 30 years since Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer in 1976. During Steven Jobs’s tenure as CEO, Apple’s mission was to bring an easy-to-use computer to market. However, Apple was not performing as good as Jobs projected, so he resigned in 1985. In the following 12 years, Apple experienced three different CEO’s and still could not be brought back to life. Under John Sculley, Apple worked to drive down costs by switching much of its manufacturing to subcontractors. But these efforts were not enough to sustain Apple’s profitability. During the Michael Spindler years, international growth became a key objective for Apple. Yet despite Spindler’s efforts, Apple lost momentum. Soon after Gilbert Amelio replaced Spindler as CEO, he proclaimed that Apple would return to its premium-price differentiation strategy. Despite some austerity moves, Apple lost its competitiveness and could not regain its share in the market. In 1997, Steve Jobs came back again as the CEO of Apple. This time he had a new game plan, and Apple started to focus on the digital lifestyle for consumers. Internally, Jobs worked to streamline operations and to reinvigorate innovation. This proved to be Apple’s most successful business strategy to date because a once ineffective company now has ruled the computer world. In order to understand this situation, Apple 's competitive advantages and industry forces must be analyzed.…
