Short Essay Questions
1. I was watching a new episode of White Collar an interesting, yet overly dramatic crime show and I distinctively remember four commercials. The first one was for some fancy restaurant that showed a nice juicy steak with a ton of appetizing food on the table. The next commercial, ironically, was for some gym that showed a man that had muscles in places I frankly didn’t know could gain muscle, the man was outrageously big. The next commercial was for another show by the same channel that was also a crime oriented show. And the last commercial I remember was of the FBI agent in the show driving a nice brand new BMW. I am positive that these commercials were intended for a male audience that was probably over the age of 24-25 and that had a decent amount of income. I say this because most college students don’t regularly go out to fancy restaurants like the one in the commercial, and we don’t pay for an up class gym when we have a perfectly fine gym for free at school. And the beamer? Well, maybe someday I’ll have one, but not at this time or age.

2. I was watching ABC 7 news when a story about the nuclear issue with Iran came on and they were saying that the U.S. is urging Iran to keep its word to the U.S. and stay away from attempting to construct nuclear weapons. The next story was immediately about Israel and the hostility that is arising between Israel and the U.S. due to the Iran issue. They said that Israel is holding its ground and preparing for the worst because of the issues with Iran a few years back. Israelis are very unhappy with what is happening around them. I believe these issues were linked in the news because whatever happens in either country might affect the other as well as the U.S. Any risky actions in any of these countries might be cause of an enormous National Security crisis.

3. I read an article on Los Angeles Daily News Today; it was on the one year anniversary of the Christopher Dorner rampage. I feel like

Advertisement companies have managed different strategies to sell their products to people according to television programming and scheduling. According to the article “Men’s Men and Women’s Women” by Steven Craig, Craig explains how advertisement companies aim commercials corresponding to the time of the day each gender watches television. There are four different categories: Men’s Men, Men’s Women, Women’s Women and Women’s Men. In Men’s Men type of commercials are shown usually during the weekend and most likely be seen during sports programming. They normally show pure males or male related products. In Men’s Women commercials most likely will show a men’s fantasy type of women and are most like shown through weekend programming. In Women’s…

On November 21, I received a negative counseling for disrespecting a Non Commissioned Officer, though it was warranted by a series of events I didn’t agree with I should have found a more appropriate way to voice my concerns. The online dictionary defines disrespect as an expression of lack of respect and a fashion that is generally disrespectful and contemptuous. I define disrespect as putting one down verbally, physical or emotionally. In this essay I will be talking about the research I did on article 88 and 91 of the uniformed code of military justice. Disrespect and insubordination in the army affects the ability of a unit to maintain discipline and order. The uniformed code of military justice (ucmj) is the bedrock of military law. The uniformed code of military justice, (ucmj), and are known as the "punitive articles," that is, specific offenses can result in court-martial. The law requires the commander in chief (the president of the United States of America) to implement the provisions of the uniformed code of military justice (ucmj). The president does this via an executive order known as the "manual for court martial" (mcm). Chapter four of the manual for court martial, aka mcm, includes and expands on the punitive articles. The manual for court martial, mcm, divides the punitive articles into six parts, the text, and elements of the offense, an explanation, lesser included offenses, maximum permissive punishments, and sample specifications. The first part of six of the manual for court martial, mcm, is the text. This is the exact text of the article, as congress approved it and the uniformed code of military justice, ucmj. The second part of six of the manual for court martial, mcm, is the elements; these are the specifics of the offense. The third is next but, first back to the elements... In order to support a finding of guilty, the government must prove each and every element of the offense…

Maybe having hero in the title is a bit of a stretch and an exaggeration. Have you ever indulged in a book that has your attention every minute of every page you read? I am sure the answer is yes. I think most people have related to this feeling at some point. Dave Dravecky, a book written in 1993, is the book that stole my mind from page one. A book that was so fascinating to me, I used it for my book report in school at least three times. As I reflect back on that, perhaps writing a book report on the same book in three different grades is a bit excessive…or just pathetic. After I finished reading this book the first time (I read it at least two times), I am almost certain that this is all I talked about. My family could attest to this. “Gee whiz Britton, stop with the Dave Dravecky talk”, I can hear them say. School friends so tired of hearing me rave about this book. “You have got to read this book”, I would say. Actually, come to think of it, most everybody around me could quote the book without ever reading it, thanks to my nonstop blabbing about every detail.…

With the rapid development of society, modern technology has become one of the most dispensable parts in most people’s daily lives. It is no doubt that modern technology like cell phones and Internet have been widely put into use. We even cannot imagine a day without Internet and electronic devices. It is no exaggeration to say that modern technology has more or less “robbed” the daily lives of most people. Many people are addicted to texting and social networking like Facebook. Sherry Turkle, in her essay “Alone Together”, argues that the machine-mediated relationships might cause many problems between people. And more and more people are “playing themselves” online with different identities. People are even more alone after using modern technology. Kenji Yoshino, in his essay “Covering: The Hidden Assault on Our Civil Rights”, asserts that everyone covers, and people cover in order to be accepted by the mainstream. Many teenagers would rather text than talk on the cellphone. People avoid face-to-face or voice-to-voice contact in order to “cover”. On the one hand, modern technology can bring people countless convenience. On the other hand, these technologies can also boost covering described by Yoshino. And the reliance on the kind of technology described in “Alone Together” can provide the opportunities for people to cover themselves.…

“Scouts of Honor” was a video that shocked me to know that the largest youth movement in the country, in which values are treating everyone equally and standing up for what you believe in, would ban gays to be a part of their organization. One in five boys in American are a boy scout. In Petalima, California, troop # 174, a twelve-year-old boy by the name of Steven Cozza started an anti-gay stand by the name of “Scouting for all”. They held petitions and set up stands at local grocery stored. They also went to San Francisco to the gay freedom day to take a stand. Steven chose to do this because of the expulsion of gays from the scouts. The New York City Police Department even opted to help in their efforts when they heard about what Cozza was doing. Cozza spoke about the increased suicide rates of teen who are searching for acceptance and trying to figure out why society is so against the homosexual community. It was justified that a gay man as a leader of a boy-scout troop would in turn be a child molester. Even the Boy Scout Association of America stated that studies show gays are less likely to be child molesters that heterosexuals. In the case against Tim Curry, the Supreme Court ruled that the Boy Scouts of American was a private institution and they could ban gays from their organization if they so desired. The boy-scout handbook teaches you to love everyone, not just certain people. Steven showed this contradiction to Americans at his rallies. Scott Cozza, Steven’s father, was forced to resign at Assistant Scout Master of Steven’s troop because f his involvement in the “Scouting for All” campaign. The banning of homosexuals from the boy scouts defeats the puproses and teachings of the boy scouts morality as a whole. In 1999, James Dale won a court case against the Boy Scouts of America stating that they were a public association and that they couldn’t discriminate on gay members. In 2000, the Supreme Court overruled their decision and stood by…
