What Is The Moral Of The Movie Office Space
The film Office space mainly focuses around Peter Gibbons, an employee in the Initech Company, his boss Bill Lumbergh has hired two consultants to downsize the company through firing some of the workers. Peter and his two engineer best friends, Samir Nagheenanajar and Michael Bolton, hate their jobs and everything that involves the work, which includes filling out useless forms, getting told of by eight managers as well as using faulty unproductive office equipment. Peter has a cheating girlfriend Ann, who suggests him to go and see an occupational hypnotherapist to solve his work problems. When he goes to see Dr. Swanson, he gets hypnotized to be in an extremely relaxed state, before Dr. Swanson is able to get him out of the hypnotic state, …show more content…
The most significant factor contributing to dissatisfaction and feeling unhappy at work is distrust and ineffective leadership. Leaders who end up controlling your every move. By not trusting your employees, you get distrusted in return, which makes people less cooperative, less committed to the job and less satisfied. Poor communication, as seen in the film, can also lead to the dissatisfaction, as it can lead to unmotivated workers and low productivity levels, therefore effective communication and good feedback can increase the employee’s confidence and moral levels, as well as the productivity of work. Rewarding employees is another way to motivate their hard work, in the film Peter stated that they were motivated to work only not to get fired or hustled; therefore they didn’t have the desire to work with the best efforts. This led the workers to be bored at their jobs, as they didn’t have the desire to work; consequently, boredom causes just as much stress as overworking. Challenging and pushing the employees to work at their best potential is also crucial to avoid dissatisfaction, trying to assign workers on positions, depending on their talents and skills, so they will be motivated by their passions for work. According to this, if a person is more communicative and open, it’s better to assign him to the position where it’s more required to talk to various people and find the right way to communicate. Therefore by paying close attention to every workers skills and unique talents, managers can avoid demotivation and burn-outs of the employees. Finally, job insecurity can make workers very unhappy; it makes them invest less as they would not want to put a lot of effort into something that they are unsure

    “Managers should do whatever they can, within reason, to enhance the job satisfaction of their employees.” I have to say I agree with this statement as it relates to employers because doing whatever they can to increase job satisfaction will reduce negative results like absenteeism, turnover, and deviant behavior, thus increasing productivity in the workplace.
