What is Transformational Leadership?
Transformational Leadership is a type of leadership style that can inspire positive changes in those who follow. They are energtic, enthusiastic and passionate.
They help and assist each and every member in the group.
James MacGregor Burns introduced this concept for the first time. According to Burns Transformational Leadership can be seen when "leaders and followers make each other to advance to a higher level of moral and motivation." Later Bernard M. Bass expanded Burn's concept and today it is known as Bass' Transformational Leadership. And according to him Transformational Leadership can be defined as the impact it has on the followers. Bass' four components of Transformational Leadership:
1. Intectual Stimulation - Encourage creativity among followers, explore new ways and opportunities. By allowing the followers to participate in an unrestricted fashion, the leader is able to use the creative and innovative solutions and implement them to achieve high quality success for the oerganization. 2. Individualized Consideration - Offers support and encouragement to individual followers. Transformational Leaders keep the line of communication open so that the followers feel free to share ideas so that the leader can offer direct recognition of the unique contributions of each follower. Eg: Mentoring employees one-on-one, delegating difficult task to deserving people, etc. 3. Inspirational Motivation - Transformational Leaders have clear vision which they articulate to the followers so that they experience the same passion and motivation to fulfill these goals. 4. Idealized Influence(Charisma) - Transformational Leaders act as a role model as the followers trust and respect the leader; they emulate this individual and follow his ideals and he would never expect his followers to do something that he or she would not do themselves.
