The Nonverbal Communication In Doctor/Patient Settings
Healthcare practitioners need to be aware of their behaviors and client interactions when in the workplace. As a practitioner, people need to use their Therapeutic Use of Self (TUOS) efficiently in order to succeed in their career. Client interaction it is important for a practitioner to be able to succeed in their workplace because clients will not come back if they do not like you. In the video, The Nonverbal Communication in Doctor/Patient Settings, by Alicia Pekema there are multiple “mess ups” created by the practitioners that need to be corrected. It is important to understand how to react with a client in a professional setting. In the first scenario of this video, the nurse is overexcited and tells the patient not to worry, she is okay and will be fine. This next situation dealt with a practitioner who had a stereotype built into his mind which caused him to treat the client incorrectly. In this video, Tom, the nurse, introduces himself to the client and tells her he is going to go through the course treatment with her. During his encounter, he tells her that since he read from her chart that she was “female and blonde” that he would slowly tell her the steps because she may not understand the terms used or become too emotional. In the workplace, no one should be treated differently because it may cause serious problems resulting in lawsuits.
The nurse invades the body space of a client and interrupts him will he is sleeping by texting on her cellphone in this scenario. The nurse felt the need to stand on a chair next to her client bed will he was sleeping to reach a blood pressure kit and put it on his arm. All practitioners need to remember that people need their body space and that they should respect their patient’s wishes, along with not using a cellphone during a client
