Sleep and Body Clock
At the beginning of this century medical scientists made a surprising discovery: that we are built not just of flesh and blood but also of time. They were able to demonstrate that we all have an internal "body clock" which regulates the rise and fall of our body energies, making us different from one day to the next. The idea of an internal "body clock" should not be surprising, since the lives of most living things are dominated by the 24-hour night-and-day cycle. The most obvious feature of this cycle is the way we feel tired and fall asleep at night and become awake during the day. If the 24-hour rhythm is interrupted, most people experience unpleasant side effects. As well as the daily rhythm of sleeping and waking we also have other rhythms which last longer that one day and which influence wide areas of our lives.

Most of us would agree that we feel good on some days and not so good on others. Scientists have identified the following three biorhythmic cycles: physical, emotional and intellectual. Each cycle lasts approximately 28 days and each is divided into a high energy period and a low energy period of equal length. During the low energy period we are less resistant to illness and tire more easily. The low period puts energy into our "batteries" for the next high period. During the high energy period of a physical biorhythm we are more resistant to illness, better coordinated and more energetic. The "crytical" or weakest time is the time of changeover from the high energy period to the low energy period, or vice versa. This "critical" time usually lasts a day. On the crytical day of a physical biorhythm, there is a greater chance of accident and illness. Human experience is always individual and we each have our own biorhythmic experiences.     An example of circadian rhythms is the sleep-wake cycle that evidence suggests that exogenous pacemakers control it. For example, the theory is that the suprachiasmatic nucleus has an involvement in controlling the sleep-wake cycle. Ralph et al investigated how the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) may be involved in the sleep-wake cycle. By examining hamsters that had a 20-hour sleep-wake cycle, he was able to extract the SCN and enter it into other hamsters with a 24-hour cycle. Ralph found that the group of hamsters with the 24-hour sleep-wake cycle eventually had a 20-hour sleep-wake cycle. Ralph’s study would suggest that endogenous pacemakers rather than other external influences control the sleep-wake cycle. However, Ralph’s experiment is very limited by the inability to be able to generalise this study to humans as this experiment is only done on animals. Yet Siffre came to similar conclusions as he took part in his longitudinal study. He found after taking himself out of humanity and into a cave for six months with only artificial light, taking away external cues, he found that his own body clock changed to 25 hours rather than a 24-hour sleep wake cycle. This disrupts your sleeping pattern because it means you are required to be alert at night, so need to sleep during the day. This reverses and disrupts your circadian rhythm, becoming desynchronised where it is no longer entrained by EZ’s. There are many consequences of desynchronisation such as sleep deprivation. Shift workers find it hard to sleep during the day because of the EZ’s such as light and sound disturbances that keep you awake. A significant relationship has been found between shift work and organ disease. For example, Knutsson found that people who worked shift work for more than 15 years were likely to develop heart disease than a non-shift worker. For starters sleep deprivation has the same effect on people as alcohol does. Often people go through uncontrolled reflexes and can get eye twitches and also experience slurred speech. Also your health could be at serious risk because of serious change in blood pressure and heart rate. By not having enough sleep your prone to be grouchy and stubborn and you can often find yourself in sticky situations that you normally would never get in to. You may find yourself getting in trouble in school for maybe not staying awake to write notes or complete assignments or maybe at work for not being focused and doing your job incorrectly which may even result in being fired. Sleep deprivation can also cause friends and family to not want to be around someone that would act weird and different by being grouchy all the time, that would drive a lot of loved ones away and would destroy your social life. In conclusion it is suggested that you get at least 8 hours of sleep and your body will have enough time recover from the stress you put on it on a regular basis so you could live a happy stress free…
