A Reflection: On Analysis of Algorithms

There was this guy who was always keen about his trip on the Manila Light Rail Transit System [LRT]. As the train passes by, he would take note of some variables; time, train operator, train number, model, etc. Even though there exists an unprecedented problem when it comes to passenger volume in the LRT, he made sure that he would always end up having a seat or getting in the earliest possible train at the very least. From a distance, he could tell by the head end of the train, the exact position of where each door would open. But isn’t that what the yellow lines are for? Sadly, yes. But due to the overlooked quality and lack of maintenance of the public service, the yellow lines are highly inaccurate. Nevertheless, they are still dependent on some things. And yes, that guy was me.
At present, the service has 3 models in rotation and if observed closely, other yellow markings seem to be darker (dirty old paint). Newly painted yellow lines correspond accordingly to the latest import and model of trains. But at the stations, old yellow lines which correspond to the oldest of the models hasn’t been removed yet. The older models also have which they call a “half-train”, instead of the usual 4 compartments, it has one less (why not call it “three-quarters train?”) they also comply with the old yellow lines. The other model, which I believe is an import from the other LRT line, doesn’t have yellow lines corresponding to its doors and stops at random points.
I also figured that during rush hour, when passenger limit is at its peak, it is more likely to aboard the train in the middle doors of a compartment rather than the ends. This is because of the passenger flow inside the train which can be paralleled to fluid dynamics. Once inside the train, I try my best to figure the color of the seated passengers’ tickets are in order to determine who will alight the train

    I’ve never really been to other parts of the train before, but I really got a good understanding of the seating arrangements that people grow accustomed to. For example, it seems people are more comfortable in facing in the direction they are moving, so more people are found sitting on the north side of the car (with seats facing the south) when going south and vice versa. So if you know the train is going to be a bit crowded, and you don’t mind the spacial distortion of movement, then your best bet in finding a seat would be to go to the opposite part of the car in the direction which the train is moving. Another fascinating observation is that there are two bathrooms, one for handicapped people and a smaller one not meant for handicapped people.     Abstract-The importance of ridership information has led transit properties to increase the amount of manually collected data or alternatively to introduce automated surveillance techniques. Naturally, the bus operators are expected to gain useful information for operations planning by obtaining more accurate passenger counts. This paper describes and analyzes several appropriate data collection approaches for the bus operator in order to set the bus frequencies/headways efficiently. Four different methods are presented to derive the bus frequency: two are based on point check (maximum load) data and two propose the use of ride check (load profile) data. A ride check provides more complete information than a point check, but at a greater cost, and there is a question as to whether the additional information gained justifies the expense. Based on available old profiles, the four methods provide the bus scheduler with adequate guidance in selecting the type of data collection procedure. In addition, the scheduler can evaluate the minimum expected bus runs when the load standard is released and avoid overcrowding (in an average sense) at the same time. Alternative timetables are also investigated in conjunction with minimizing the required bus runs and number of buses for a single route. In this way, the derived headways can be analyzed within an acceptable range while considering the possible changes incurred indirectly to the fleet size. The integration between resource. saving and frequency determination procedures allows the scheduler’s performance to be improved.…
