Date: Student #: SAMPLE LETTER #4: ACCUMULATED FAILS For information only, to assist student in avoiding assignment of additional failing grades. Issued once 5 failing grades (E/F/N) assigned in course of UVic studies. Dear Student

FOR INFORMATION ONLY ACCUMULATED FAILING GRADES Faculty: This letter is being sent to you on behalf of the Dean of your Faculty. This notice carries no academic penalty. A review of your UVic undergraduate records shows that you had accumulated five (5) or more failing grades over the course of your undergraduate studies at UVic (you may not have been assigned a failing grade in the current session). As your sessional gpa is adversely affected by any failing grades and as a low sessional gpa may cause you to become ineligible to continue your studies and be asked to withdraw from UVic (please see the sections under STANDING and WITHDRAWAL in the University Calendar) this letter is being sent to you for information only to help you avoid these possibilities. Please consider the following suggestions: 1. Choose your courses carefully 2. Avoid overloading yourself: be aware of your personal time commitment 3. Monitor your academic progress carefully on an on-going basis, being mindful of academic drop deadlines 4. Check with your department Undergraduate Advisor about course selection or to see if supplementary tutoring is available for particular problem courses 5. Talk with a Faculty Academic Advisor or the Assistant Dean to review your program/degree selection if necessary 6. Consult Counselling Services if you require assistance with your study skills Best wishes for success in your future studies. Undergraduate Records University of Victoria FW

After choosing this organization for my service learning project, I reviewed your website, where I found volunteer job descriptions. Nutrition Educator struck a chord with me, because I can relate my real life working experience to some of the tasks this position holds. In my current work place, we are bombarded by candy bowls and the occasional employee appreciation pastry. I have expressed to my co-workers the benefits of fruits and vegetables. We now have implemented a communal fruit bowl in place of the candy. It has become a great gateway into taking necessary steps toward creating a stronger sense of health in my workplace. I also possess a solid belief in leading by example, and have converted my once sitting desk into a standing desk to avoid a sedentary lifestyle. Many co-workers now look…

    Dear Ben,

Hey Ben! I was talking with Sean yesterday when he told me the news, you're planning to delay college. This came as a shock to me when I heard it. By not attending college, you may get a year's rest and a chance to think your decisions through, but if you ever do decide to attend college, you will miss out on a lot of opportunities as well. I think you should consider going to college rather than driving the open road after High School.

The information you've learned in High School will be more fresh in your mind now than 1 year from now. You have passed 12 years of schooling, yet now you believe it is time to rest and see other places and people for a year or more before attempting college. College adds 4 more years…

I seek to attend college after high school because I have come to the realization that in life, knowledge is key. You really can not persevere to be anything in life if you don't have the will and determination to complete the task. As of right now, the task I am trying to complete is getting into college, to better myself as an individual. My two older brothers, are prime examples of what I don't want to become, they did not accomplish going to college or have the desire to finish school. I know it will be a difficult decision on your part to accept a student like me due to my scores, rank and GPA, but I'm not the same person who I was throughout my high school days. I should have realized sooner that my incompetence was going to come back to bite, but I can assure you that I am not the same person I was before. If I could go back to choose my friends differently and make changes to different aspects of my life I would, because having the friends that I did during high school, and hanging out with the "wrong" crowd may be the biggest regret of my life. But now, as it may be late, I have acquired the common sense and integrity for myself to say enough is enough with them. I wish to go to college, and attain a degree here, to pave a better future for myself. I strongly believe attending college will teach me principles that I will not find anywhere else, along with teaching me responsibility and helping me make great friends along the way. I want to be the example to my two younger sisters that college is a must if you want to be successful, and if I could do it, then they can succeed as well. Knowledge isn't inherited; I believe anyone can attain the knowledge they wish to have, they just have to have the dedication to pursue what they want. I'm willing to put everything aside and put education first. I understand that I will need to focus and work harder in my academics, and that is something I am willing to do to get to the finish line that I am aiming for.…

Albert Einstein once said that only a life that is lived in the service to others is worth living. As a future nurse, I plan to be in service to others to reach success and do my best to learn both theory and practice, to work on my personal and professional skills and share this knowledge with others. My plan to being successful in completing the Nursing Program is a mixture of my character, patience, devotion to medical standards and learning by valuable examples in life. Reaching for success, I see completing the Nursing Program as a great professional responsibility and an honor to use my knowledge, experiences and skills to help people and make a valuable contribution to the society and science. I have always wanted to…
