"The Philippine Literature now a days"

The diversity and richness of Philippine literature evolved side by side with the country's history. Long before the Spaniards and other foreigners landed or set foot on Philippine shores, our forefathers already had their own literature stamped in the history of our race.
Our ancient literature shows our customs and traditions in everyday life as traced in our folk stories, old plays and short stories. Our ancestors also had their own alphabet which was different from that brought by the Spaniards.

--> LITERATURE: the body of oral and written works, text, books, poetry, etc. these are the several things that concern this subject. we have been exposed to literature ever since we were young. reading, writing, that's what we do. but is this really the essence of literature?

the time i realized that i was going to take up "Philippine Literature" this semester, i was rather a bit curios about what would be in store for me, for the whole class.

our Literature instructor Ms. Dinah Laguna-Mission is very enthusiastic in teaching us. never came a time that i felt sleepy or bored during our lit. subject. she has a lively voice and pronunciation, lively gestures and the witty use of words were the things i looked forward to every time she came.

at first, i expect that the subject content and the teaching method was just a repetition of what has been taught to us during high school. but i was wrong, the different genre of literature, different devices and ever famous figures of speech were the ones being taught to us.

after all the experiences and new knowledge imparted to me, i realized that Literature is not only about just reading the stories, poems, riddles, etc. but either its understanding them deeply. i thank Ms. Mission for imparting this knowledge imparted to me and the whole class for making this journey bearable and truly enjoyable one. it was beyond doubt an accomplishment for us and so, even if i finish

I am hoping that this class is extremely identical. So once again, my name is Cindy Wong and you just read an essay about my journey as a writer. I hope I was able to take you on a journey with my words into my viewpoints of various kinds of writing subjects that I learned about a couple years ago. I also included within this essay, my summary of “Inventing the University” by David Bartholomae which shows how much I have grown on the way when compared to my summary of “Shitty First Drafts” which was “shitty” compared to the one I just wrote. My writing journey will continue to be more vast and eye opening within this class and I hope to learn many new writing essentials that will be valuable in my…

The definition of literature is not easy to concretely decide upon, and deciding if a piece of work is literature is harder to conclude when there is no concrete definition of the category. Various people have differing opinions on what makes literature literature: it may be believed that literature consists of the Classics (Shakespeare, Homer, Sophocles, etc.), and it may also be believed that literature consists of what students are forced to read while in school (The Catcher in the Rye, The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter, etc.). Though it is hard to categorize what does and what does not fall under the literature umbrella as a whole, it is more difficult to define the characteristics of literature, even if it is supposed to help ease the process…

According to Merriam-Webster, literature can be defined as written works (such as poems, plays, and novels) that are considered to be very good and to have lasting importance. The word can also be refers to anything “written with letters,” like David Damrosch points out in his book “refers first and foremost to poems, plays, and prose fiction—works of creative imagination written in heightened and pleasurable language” (Damrosch 6). Still in this explanation Damrosch acknowledges that “literature’s boundaries are blurry” (6). Yet, as the impact of globalization accelerated the need for universal literature, its meaning has changed to reflect on the modern days’ views and lifestyle. Literary scholars have defined literature as a higher…

At first, I thought that I wasn't going to learn anything, but at the end I found it amazing how this class helped me. I never thought I could write a four page essay but as the time was passing I didn't realize that I was improving in my writing. My first stage was my first challenge, I didn’t know how to start, but I put my headphones on and I started typing. The next day, I asked for help in The Writing center and they gave great advices that had to do with my organization. When I turned it in I couldn´t wait to get my teacher's responses, which also helped me a lot to see what I should’ve or should’ve not done . In my second stage the level of difficulty was raised up since we had to write more than 3 pages and that brought my attention higher. In stage 3 all the work I had to do was to organize my ideas for my next stage which was another research that gave me the ability of separating my topics. In stage 4 we had to make an investigation where I learned how to do primary research. And I had to Interview a person and that gave me a challenge of communicating with other people for my project. And finally stage 5 became to be a little easier since it was a reflection of all the work we had already done, it made me realize that I really improve in my compositions.…

When I first started this class I was very anxious about what to expect. I was hesitant and unsure if I am going to make it through, I doubted myself, every week I wanted to give up, mainly due to the fact as English is not my first language. As the class progressed, I felt more and more confident because of the different resources offered by the professor. Those resources were a very good aid in my writing. For example, in my first essay, the article written from the perspective of Donald Trump’s hair, played an important role in my decision of choosing a topic.…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

In all honesty, I had very low expectations of English 103. I have always preferred math and science over English and did not enjoy English 102 very much. Despite my low expectations and preconceived notions of what English 103 would entail, I actually enjoyed myself this semester. Specifically, the poem The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S. Eliot changed my demeanor. I should start with the fact that I am a feminist and anything about equality, gender roles, or stereotypes intrigues me. This poem’s take on what true masculinity entails entranced me almost immediately. The class spent on this poem was the lecture I participated the most in. After the lecture, I was taken aback by my amount of participation because I do not often like…

    Entering My Writing Class

Starting off my first semester of college I didn't know what to expect, the first day felt like the first day of high school all over again. With graduation over and the first day of college over, high school was just like college. When entering my reading class it reminded me of my senior writing class but with a twist of personality. What I learned in reading class this semester was more of a review of my senior writing and reading class combined. I enjoyed learning about both topics because it would help my vocab in the essays I would have to write. The thing I liked most about this class was that I had a lot of knowledge about the topic when starting. I knew what we were talking about so it made it more joyful to learn about the subject…

The moment I found myself sitting at my desk, confused and shocked at the grade I had been given. Being the egotistical brat I was at the time, my first thoughts were “This has to be a mistake, an obvious mistake.” I waited for the end of class, fidgeting in my seat every second, all the while reassuring myself that I could sort everything out. Finally, the bell rang loudly and after the rest of the students had shot out of their seat and headed for the door, I stood and walked over to her desk and politely inquired about my essay. She quickly looked over the first two pages then handed me back the essay with little enthusiasm. “Your writing skills need some work. You were going off subject quite a bit”, she informed me. With an ego my size, even the smallest of criticism hit me hard. I nodded and realized that I still had so much to work on, but I was oddly confident this teacher could help me. Mrs. Hoer was her name, and I began to respect her more than any English teacher I had prior. She showed me how writing is far more than just sitting down at home and trying to think of something profound that will impress a teacher. I learned that language can have endless meaning and give so much enjoyment for readers who take the time to analyze literature. Questioning an author’s credibility and their reason for writing a particular piece were things I had never been asked to do until her English class. Throughout my senior year in high school I learned more than I ever had in the class with her. The concept I had of how easy English was became shattered, and I found myself being far more open to new ideas and styles or writing. If I had not been transferred into AP English that year, I may have never gotten over myself, and would have never progressed as far as I…

Ms. Anna taught me how to persevere in her classroom. How to weigh as little as possible, shrinking to a point where there was no more of me to give. Showing me how to expose the hills of my ribs, deep valleys between each bone, deserts of famished flesh. She taught me how to drop my grades in my other classes and how to strive in hers. She stole my eagerness for reading books; books that left me engrossed, absorbed almost in a trance. Books that transported me to another reality. She took that eagerness and snuffed it out with a pillow leaving it breathless, snuffed out like a lost flame - like…

Reading “Trifles” and debating or weather Minnie was innocent or not was one of my favorite moments. “My Papa’s Waltz” was a great poem and extremely relatable for me. At first I was scare of taking this course. I thought World Literature was boring, complicated and too hard for me. I supposed it was only about difficult lectures that I would not be able to understand, big complicated words that it would be hard for me to used, and writing, writing, and more writing. I knew this course was going to be a big challenge for me because I do not like to read neither to write. To my surprise, I found myself intrigue with World Literature because of the lectures. The cultures that we cover in this course were fascinating because of their myths, how each culture views their gods, and their life styles. The lecture of the “The Huluppu-Tree” captivated me the most because is how they perceive the beginning of the world. Another story that made a big impact on me is “The Story of Prometheus” because of the moral and the message of the story. Also, the “Tales of Loki – Norse God of Mischief” is a story that I really enjoy. I had no idea that these lectures could cover so many mysteries and that is what makes them so fascinating. Knowing the mysteries of these cultures had a big impact to me. World Literature opened my eyes to a magnificent new world and now I have a new perspective about World Literature. Now I feel fascinating and comfortable in this course and I wish I could learn more. This course gave me the skills and knowledge to express clearly myself through writing and speaking. Most importantly, it gave me the ability to think outside the box, something I did not know how to do it.…
