Personal Narrative: My Journey To The CSI Field
The summer after my freshman year in high school, I had the opportunity to go to a forum in Washington, D.C. The forum discussed law and crime scene investigations (CSI). Although the forum was held for approximately six days, it changed my life. I had always yearned to be in the CSI field, but through the mock trial, investigations and the people whom I was able to meet at the forum I was able to fully establish my feelings about the future since I was able to experience the veracity of the

Personal background starts off small, it changes and grows over time into something big, it grows into an identity. Walking down the hallway at school, seeing someone standing alone, my first instinct is to make conversation, compliment, or even just smile at him or her. This instinct came from someone once telling me an act so small could turn a person's entire life around. As a kid, reading encyclopedias about random topics, consumed my time. Many days were spent coming home to find an injured wild animal in my dad's arms waiting to be saved. My dad would sit outside and draw animals, trees, and anything else he saw. Nothing excited me more than trying to draw whatever my dad drew, and as good as he did. Any assignment that was handed to…

    2. Do you think you suffer from the "CSI effect"? Why or why not? What problems do you think this "effect" has on the criminal justice system? I think that to a certain extent I do suffer from the “CSI effect”. This is because the entire reason I’m so interested in the field of forensics is from watching crime shows such as NCIS and other forensic documentaries. Doing this might have given me an unrealistic expectation of how the study of forensics worked. However, I do understand that this field isn’t as quick and simple as portrayed on television, and even knowing this, I’m still just as interested in the field. I think that this effect causes problems in the criminal justice system such as people who give up on cases more easily than they otherwise would, because they would perceive the analyzing of evidence to be a slower process. It could also mean that there are people in the field less motivated, because their job isn’t what they expected.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

When I joined the police department, I knew I wanted to be a part of something great. I wanted to leave a legacy and make an impression on others. I was the first in my family to choose a career in law enforcement, so initially, I was unaware of the challenges this career field came with. My mom was a teacher, and my dad worked in the printing business. Both were successful in their chosen fields, but they were blind to the demands required for a fulfilling career in law enforcement. To be successful, I would need to be observant of those around me who had found success. I would need to mirror their ways and incorporate their habits into my own. I would need to learn from their failures. Most importantly, I would need to learn what made them…

There I was laying on the field, during the second half of my football game, tossing and turning as I held my right shoulder in agonizing pain. I looked up only to see the trainer looking down at me with a concerned look. “What’s wrong?” he asked. Repeatedly I tapped my shoulder as I was struggling to get the words out. He helped me up and walked me back to the sideline. I waited for what seemed like hours for the game to end. A few days later, I went to a local doctor to get an X-ray. The doctor told me that there was nothing wrong and that the pain should subside in a couple of days, and it did. Later in the season as I went in for a tackle, I felt my shoulder pop. Immediately I was in pain and thought to myself, “ It happened again.” This…

My education will never be complete. This knowledge affords me the ability to grow each and every day. It teaches me to question the world and to learn from these questions. I learn through different lenses and circumstances I experience each day. At seventeen, I am nowhere near complete. I am young. I am flawed. I am naïve. What I have learned has led me down different paths in order to achieve different milestones on my own journey. I am strong. I am creative. I am poised...but most importantly I am learning. My education has allowed me to learn about myself, about others, and about the world. I am evolving through the educational process and through the effort of acquiring knowledge. I have no idea what I will learn tomorrow --some days…

This semester I had the opportunity to enroll in the BGS colloquia course in Forensic Anthropology lead by Monica Faraldo. It has furthered depended my interest as it encompasses a myriad of elements from humanities, the physical sciences, and the social sciences. The application of those elements along with various cultures, beliefs, and research methods native to the immediate environment you’re conducting research in, is what makes the field so dynamic and so intriguing. Anthropologists have to study not only the immediate subject material, but all the influences of the surrounding environment, and then apply their diverse knowledge of human development toward their investigation. I believe my contribution to the world community will be through groundbreaking, life-changing research in the field of Forensic Anthropology.…
