1. Complete the unit 2 review questions:
a. The __bus_____ physical topology consists of a single cable that connects all nodes on a network without intervening connectivity devices.
b. A(n) __serial__ backbone is the simplest kind of backbone.
c. Fast Ethernet operates at ___100Mbps___.
d. _Switches___ is a component of a network’s logical topology that determines how connections are created between nodes.
e. One thing all Ethernet networks have in common is their access method, known as
____CSMA/CD___.
2. For the client situation described in the Discussion/Project Topic above, use Microsoft Visio
2007 to generate a diagram for a proposed network topology. Write a 1-2 page proposal for the research group explaining why that design would best meet their needs. …show more content…
In this topology I have chosen to use a star topology due to the size of this network.
Since it is small peer to peer network we will be able to use this type of topology. This network is designed for a maximum of ten computers, if the lab where to exceed ten computers; the purchasing of network operation software would be needed and a new design (topology) may be necessary. A drawback to this type of topology is the fact that if the hub goes out (fails) the network will crash. On the upside however, if a node malfunctions it will not affect the rest of the network. Backing up the data for this lab will be a must in case a computer or the network itself crashes. Using an online backup will help not only keep data safe in case of a crash but also of a natural disaster or any other type of situation where data can be
lost.
With a virtual private network it will add security to the network and allow the use of remote access which the lab requires for the use of the specialized machines. This will give logins to each user and grant certain access that each user will need. Limiting the use of internet will be another feature that will be added as well. Also, this will control the data use between the users on the network to prevent bottlenecking and saturation. The network will use CAT6E cable for the standard cable in the building. This will allow for data to be transmitted up too 10GB. The main reason for choosing this cable is to reduce the amount of noise that may come from the specialized machines. It would be pointless to have a network that can’t run when the scientist are doing tests in a lab. What would be the point if they cannot save data or share it on the network? With this type of cabling in mind we must follow the structure cabling to ensure we are following standards.
