Louis Couperus 1863-1923

This week’s essay is a comparative analysis of the theories of freedom (indeterminism) and predestination (religious determinism). Our analysis will attempt to prove the superiority of the theory of freedom over the theory of predestination. First, we will examine the theory of predestination as it is explained in the text “Ethics: Theory and Practice” (Thiroux & Krasemann, 2012). The organization of the text lends itself to our analysis since it highlights differences between the two theories in its defining process. We will illustrate the theory of predestination by offering an example which will humanize the theory. Next, we will explore the theory of freedom through the lens of predestination. We will then exhibit the theory of freedom with an example. Finally, we will analyze and compare the two theories by demonstrating their applicability for today’s society and arguing the superiority of the theory of freedom over the theory of predestination.…

Determinism, for those that are religious the decision they make them believe it’s be ordain by their decisions. But if you think about it, whatever ‘free-will’ choices we make that path has been destine to occur, if we chooses wrong, or right, or the alternative of right and wrong, or non-religious path what waits us, seem to be somewhat ordain by our discussion where it was ‘free-will’ of self-interest, or of religiously –“free will”. Determinism, seems to be like a line game they use to determine the path of result of one will do, well in terms of one of school.…

Determinism is a controversial topic to free will with multiple theories proving and disproving it. As printed in The Collins Cobuild Learner's Dictionary, determinism is defined as “...the belief that all actions and events result from other actions, events, or situations, so people cannot in fact choose what to do.” Meaning, all life choices are predetermined from the minute we are born, to the minute we die. In contrast, “freewill is an individual taking control and responsibility for his/her actions according to his personal will” (Freewill Verses Determinism). People who believe in Free will, accept the idea that life is not predetermined, and they can independently act however they see fit. Free will and determinism can be further simplified and have multiple differences as well as similarities.…

Some things that happen in your everyday lives are determined in advance. For example, the sun rising every morning or the moon rising every night are something we can count on everyday (Nagel, page 49). Determinism is defined as all of your events being caused by things that happened before them, making it inevitable (Nagel, page 51). What we do is insistent to our choices, wants, and needs but before our choice, our brains somehow are automatically making the choice. Determinism undermines moral responsibility,…

Others say, or imply, that they do know what it is. Of these, some—the pessimists perhaps—hold that if the thesis is true, then the concepts of moral obligation and responsibility really have no application, and the practices of punishing and blaming, of expressing moral condemnation and approval, are really unjustified. Others—the optimists perhaps—hold that these concepts and practices in no way lose their raison d’être if the thesis of determinism is true. Some hold even that the justification of these concepts and practices requires the truth of the thesis. There is another opinion which is less frequently voiced: the opinion, it might be said, of the genuine moral sceptic. This is that the notions of moral guilt, of blame, of moral responsibility are inherently confused and that we can see this to be so if we consider the consequences either of the truth of determinism or of its falsity. The holders of this opinion agree with the pessimists that these notions lack application if determinism is true, and add simply that they also lack it if determinism is false. If I am asked which of these parties I belong to, I must say it is the first of all, the party of those who do not know what the thesis of determinism is. But this does not stop me from having some sympathy with the others, and a wish to reconcile them. Should not ignorance, rationally, inhibit such sympathies? Well, of course, though…

people and their actions, which means if people act freely because they are not determined to act as they do. The person could have done the complete opposite, which makes determinism false. But if determinism is true, both obligation and responsibility have no application to anything. Justified application of the concepts of moral obligation and responsibility requires freedom, and freedom implies the falsity of determinism. In conclusion, a pessimist believe determinism is true.…

Many people live their lives effortlessly making decisions everyday, major and minor, and not thinking about the effect their decisions have, or even why they make some of their decisions. Do our decisions really matter or make a difference? In the deterministic way of thought, no, the decisions one makes on a day to day basis are actually not decided in the present. Events that have happened in the past determine the outcome of every situation in the present. This way of thinking presents itself in deterministic literature, but also in everyday life for some people. To acquire insight into this way of thinking, one must look at the origins and types of determinism, its appearance in literature, relevance today and the controversy and…

A loophole that is extremely subtle always misleading readers to consider determinism and fatalism equivalent. However, the definitions of these two theories seem to vary considerably. Fatalism focuses on the immutable end regardless of any pre-conditions, on the other hand, Determinism honors the causality. People who use Fatalism and Determinism interchangeably would claim that both theories will lead up to the same end, because everything is determined somehow according to both views. To avoid being confused with fatalism and criticized by Libertarians for its pessimistic worldview, it’s crucial to include random chance to the definition of determinism. No matter how persuasive Determinism is, the dilemma of fifty and fifty might happen while deliberating. For example, a person may want an apple or a pear in the same degree, taking everything into account including desires, reasons, propensity and etc. Till this point, the application of causality may not work, and the chance would take over our mental process, namely, deliberation. Admitting randomness as a part of our actions would not give away to Libertarians because they assume that free actions must be done voluntarily rather than by…

Determinism is like saying that a person did not do the actions that they committed. It is like blaming someone else for what they did and not taking responsibility for their actions. On the other hand, it also has some truth to it. For example people with mental health issues, depression, to be specific, did not choose this for themselves. They did not want it nor can they get rid of it. They can take medication but it is never really gone. It is in their genes , or something caused them to be this way. People cannot control it.This is due to the chemicals in our brain change and they do not have the same brain activity. The brain is an interesting thing, it can be controlled by outside forces. "This is absolutely out of my control," (Tom Chivers) This…

As stated by Leucippus, “an absolute necessity leaves no room in the cosmos for chance.” “Nothing occurs at random, but everything for a reason and by necessity.” Many compatibilists accept that determinism is real. They also argue about the fact that a man is free as long as his own choices are in the chain of what is supposed to occur. Fatalism is a form of determinism that explains how every event in the future is fated to happen. Determinism in general is mostly related to causality. But causality can happen without determinism if it follows an uncaused event that was not predictable from events in the past. If indeterminism occurs, that means that the events happen without a specific cause. So there can possibly be adequate determinism. Regular situations for objects would approach statistical certainty. If determinism is real, then there is only one possible future. So we are not able to make our own decisions? Phillipa Foot had argued that because our actions are determined by what we want to do, how we act, our beliefs, how we feel, what we desire, does not under any circumstance lead to the conclusion that they are pre-determined from the beginning of time.…

Determinism and Fatalism are beliefs or, in general, outlooks towards life, between which several variances can be acknowledged. Both of these philosophies hold the view that there is no such thing as a free will and that it is merely a deception. If we think that we are powerless and what is destined - or is our fate - will happen, regardless of we may do we hold an attitude that is referred to as fatalism. On the other hand, those who believe that there is a source of every result and that tomorrow is constructed on what we do today are determinists - or having belief in determinism. Fatalists belittle all human activities, saying that happenings in life are predetermined and whatever is going to happen will happen, regardless. Determinists…
