My Own Understanding of Politics
My Own Understanding of Politics

"A means by which individuals and interest groups compete to shape government's impact on society's problems and goals." Politics is easily defined. It is the concept behind the words that is more difficult to understand. Though politics is the primary method of communicating with government, this is not the only time politics are used. Immediate, individual interests, wants, and needs must be satisfied, as well as societal problems. The pursuit of interest is the purpose and initiation of political behavior.

The moment an individual actively pursues an interest or works toward the completion of a goal, it is projected outside him. For example, a person is shopping for a car. The situation is no longer individual because he cannot achieve his goal of obtaining a new car alone; another person or dealership must make the car available to him. Because the person selling the car also has a goal, there is interplay of interests, and the implications of politics.

Negotiation over a car, or anything of interest involves a distribution of attention from one side to another. Just as a car has a seller and a buyer, the government has different political parties, and each issue has a group for and against it. Gaining cooperation from the other side requires strategy.

Tactics used range from peaceful, including persuasion and civil disobedience, to violent. But the expectation of reward and the actual probability of reward essentially dictate political action.

Rewards are both individual and societal. Power and the ability to control motivate our political leaders. Desire for wealth fuels citizens and the economy. Skilled citizens are represented in the technologically advanced Japanese population. Enlightenment comes from an educated society. Health is invaluable to everyone, and to society when average life spans increase. And finally, respect, morality, and affection are the values that make up a person's essence.

Good politicians get to know a lot of politicians. Lyndon Johnson would take four showers a day and brush his teeth over and over again so he would be in the same room with a bunch of politicians and he could talk to them briefly and make good connections. Lyndon Johnson also hired a man who would later turn corrupt named "Bobby" Baker who answered phones for the White House cloak room (a cloak room is like the break room for politicians.) With Bobby Baker, Johnson was able to know the inner workings of politics. Ronald Reagan also worked very hard to have good relationships in politics although he talked about Washington as if he'd never visited the place.…

Politics plays a huge role in everyone’s lives and is always a topic of discussion in today’s society. Peoples political views differ from one side of the spectrum to the other and there is really no right or wrong view, it is all personal opinion. Even the term politics has multiple definitions out there that are accepted by some and rejected by others. Dyck defines politics as “The activity in which conflicting interests struggle for advantage or dominance in the making and execution of public policies.” (Dyck, Rand, 2012). Some people believe this is a proper definition of politics while others disagree and believe other definitions are more appropriate. This paper will illustrate examples that support Dyck’s definition and how it can be…

Politics refers to the influencing of the people, in other words, corrupting the opinions of voters. This country is known for its continuous support of the people and how our voices effect the Government. If only this was true. We can’t rely on our people anymore because of the lack of consideration going into a vote. There are two things that affect a voter's ballot, who they do not want to win and political parties. In an article…

Harold D. Lasswell's famous definition of politics is "who gets what, when, and how," but to me, the famed musical Chicago's Razzle Dazzle song first comes to mind when I am watching political news. While my peers dismiss politics as shallow or make little attempts to understand the issues in depth, I myself love politics, a stranger to the apathy millennials leans towards. I spent hours upon hours, hearing and reading who's dissing who, the compromises and disagreements between parties, the struggles of a divided government, proposed legislation, etc.…
