Karl Marx’ theory of the relations of production can be used as an important platform in locating the origins of class and gender inequity to the early stages of capitalism. In his theory ‘the relations of production’ he explained that private ownership of…
According to the Marxism theory, the proletariat are being exploited by the bourgeoisie as they own the means of production which indicates that they are the basis of the whole society and they control everything in it including the family. This kind of system could be seen as a capitalist society which means it makes the rich gets richer and the poor gets poorer.…
Another type of feminist is Marxism, these argue that the main cause of oppression of women in the family is capitalism and not men as suggested by other feminists. Women’s oppression have several functions for capitalism, these include: Women reproduce…

Working Girl, directed by Mike Nichol, recalls a rags-to-riches story in a modern society where the class divisions are precisely sharp. Set in the 1980s, the film provides a historical situation of inequitable distribution: this inequity sways all the characters’ behavior. Though Tess McGill and Jack Trainer spark up a romance, it is Tess’ acquisitiveness that make the romance sizzle. In order to impersonate the bourgeoisie, Tess undergoes an extraordinary transformation. Tess, a proletariat, learns that if she wants to get ahead, she has to act, talk, and dress like the bourgeoisie. The film offers clear evidence of conspicuous consumption—the clothing Tess’ boss, Katherine Parker, wears—suggesting a negative example of the Marxist theory and a tacit endorsement of the free market.…
Marxism- The Marxist theory looks at the bourgeoisie and the proletariat role in society through employment. Proletariat is the word used to determine the ‘wage-earners’ in society, and are generally the working class who have average jobs and work for somebody else. Bourgeoisie on the other hand is used to describe the people who own and run the industrial environment and work places, they are usually middle class and have the proletariat working for them because they own the means of production. Marxist believe the bourgeoisie make use of the proletariat and have both cultural and economic power over them, this then leads to class conflict. From a health point of view Marxist would say that society functions deliberately so the bourgeoisie stay in power and stay wealthy and so that the proletariat stay at working class and have no chance of building themselves up. They would also stress at the fact that the bourgeoisie’s power if ascribed and certainly not achieved, because how can it be achieved if the proletariat are not able to build themselves up how can they end up being in power. They say the NHS should be accessible to anyone and everyone and no matter what class you fall under healthcare should not be not available to anyone. Marxist also believe that whether you are proletariat or bourgeoisie, the amount you earn and your ability to pay should not determined whether or not you can have access to health care and medication and that equality is wrong and everyone should be aloud the same opportunities.…
When reading a book, or any piece of literature of that matter, the readers background is important. It is apart of how the reader perceives the piece. Two different readers with different viewpoints and backgrounds are naturally going to have different opinions and will analyze the same piece of writing very differently. For example, a feminist lens and a marxist lens. A feminist lens would notice all cases where a man and a women are not being compared as equal or a woman is being more dependent . A marxist lens would analyze everything as a higher power and a lower power, everything from their viewpoint would involve rank of importance and power. In Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, there were many ways a person with a feminist lens and a person with a marxist lens would analyze the same situation completely different.…
According to the Marxists, our society is largely influenced by wealth. They believe that big businesses help capitalists because majority of the money goes towards them. Also, when big business owners have children the business will pass down to them which means the rich will stay rich and the poor will stay poor as it is harder for them to get a good change. Middle and lower class people are taught in schools the rules and how to respect the higher class. This supports the Marxist theory as it shows how the family does help the interests of capitalism.…
That Nancy Hartstock should follow Karl Marx’s lead in developing her “Feminist Standpoint” - the perspective of the oppressed in a ‘phallocratic’ regime in order to describe the oppressive dynamics of the ruling gender – did not surprise me. After all, as she explains, it is only through his use of a proletariat perspective that enabled Marx to accurately view and describe the exchange of values that ultimately benefits the bourgeoisie with surplus value, much to the detriment of their workers, subsequently left to survive on subsistence-wages. Given its historic standing, political credentials and academic regard, Marxist understanding of capital and capitalism would be the logical blueprint upon which to build a more modern analysis…

Marxism was introduced and studied by Karl Marx during 1818 and 1883. The Marxist view is based on the conflicts and interests of the society, it also strongly highlights on the importance of conflict in societies and communities. They also believe that economics are the bases of progressing and social life this can be achieved by struggling through social classes. The two classes that Marx discussed about were the Bourgeoisie and Proletariat. The Bourgeoisie class is a small powerful group who may have owned factories or own companies whereas the Proletariat is a poorer group of workers. The way a Marxists thinks is based on the financial structures and systems as well as social class meaning that these factors are vital in the Marxist view.…
Marxists are all in agreement that there are several functions of the family that are fulfilling for capitalism. Marxism is a believer in the separation of classes and the oppression of the lower working class. Marxists would argue that capitalist society is separated in to two social classes.…

Marxism shares in common with functionalism the macro structural approach to society, looking at it as a whole, however a key difference between the two theories is that marxism is a conflict perspective, that is the conflict of class between the bourgeoisie and the proletariat also known as the ruling and working classes. The work of Karl Marx in the mid 1800s constitutes the main body of this conflict theory, he wrote that the central institution of capitalist society is private property, the system by which capital (money, machines, factories and other material objects) is controlled by a small minority of the population, leading to opposed classes i.e. the bourgeoisie and the proletariat (Cohen 1978). Marxists believe that society is based on ascribed status which is given by birth or family background, therefore the bourgeoisie pass down their land and properties to their children, keeping the wealth in the…
