Man from the South
Analysis - Man from the south

Writer: Roald Dahl
Main characters: The little man and the young cadet

Man from the South was written by the famous writer, Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916 and died 1990. He was a British and Norwegian author. His parents were Norwegians. He is most known for his black comedy and his collection of children's books

It starts outside a hotel, under a yellow umbrella by the swimming pool. The young boy and the little man watching Americans cadets and English girls in the swimming pool. A cadet and an English girl came up to the little man and the young boy and sat down at the same table. The cadet offers a smoke to everyone. When he's going to light the smoke between his lips, the little man says: "That will not work in this wind." "Sure it'll work. It always works" the cadet answers. The little man starts discussing with the cadet and offers a bet, the bet I about the lighter successfully lights 10 times I a raw, without failing one single time. He will get a Cadillac if he makes the bet. If the lighter wont light, he must scarify one of the little finger. The young boy is “in” and they goes up to the hotel room to do the bet.
As soon as the little man gets the equipment he needs to hold his hand, he starts to prepare the bet. The cadet has to have his hand on a table, so the little man can take his finger as soon as the lighter fails to light. When they were in the middle of the bet, a woman came in and interrupted, probably the wife of the little man. She told the young boys that the little man is mentally disturbed, in the last years he has chopped of more than 47 fingers from different people. They can’t go through with the bet because he doesn’t have anything to bet. The car doesn’t belong to the little man, it belong to the woman.

My opinion:
I liked the story a lot, the story was easy to understand. I especially liked twists in the story, but he makes it a bit too

This story was very odd but was a good book. The fiction of this story is tied to reality in a very unique way, that is very effective in making the story not feel very fantasy. This feature made the book truly more enjoyable. Other writing techniques like not having any foreshadowing. The book keeps you guessing until the very end. Even within the story parts that I had never seen coming, Like releasing the prince. Allowing Alix to run away and eventually return on curiosity.…

I like how he narrates the story, too. The one with young love. The way the author showed us him walking down with his girlfriend while he was narrating the story is a great technique. The piano in the background is another good technique.…

It had humor, real life events, sadness, and suspense. I would most definitely recommend this novel to someone because although it’s very long, you won’t want to stop reading it. One day person named tom was out camping in the woods with a bunch of rednecks. Tom brung his four-wheeler along with his camping supplies. He and the group drove out there. “Come on you old one mile an hour driving kid,” “I’m Comin and I not a kid,” Tom said. Tom was a little younger than the group. Tom was on the trail following the group's “orders”. He was out learning how to camp redneck style. Tom always hated robby, the one who yelled at him. One time when he was wrestling around with Robby’s younger son Tom slammed him, Robby’s son started crying. Then he got up and hit him with a stick on the leg. I thought the writer had a really good flow of style and expressed herself really well, especially with the storyline. It was a great story overall, the writer was very graphic with her words and it kind of made me feel like I was there re-living that moment with her. Her style was cool and she built up the story with conflict. The suspense was awesome because she made it feel like it was going to be good from the start to the end, but then I felt the tension when things became dark and muggy. The argumentation was written well and the story ended on a good note. The writer wrote for her people and you could literally…

What does being southern mean to me? Growing up in the south has not been a struggle for me, seeing that I grew up in Anniston, Al. I was raised in Georgia for the last fifteen years, I have listened to countless people say, “Y'all”, to drinking three gallons of tea a day, with almost the whole bag of sugar inside the picture. In my overall opinion of being southern, it can be viewed as a state of mind and sign of activities. Growing up you would learn more about the south and how people grew up and you would always picture those people going home on their porch with their family, talking and sitting in rocking chairs till sunset.…
