Question One : Swot Analysis of the Kenya Posts and Telecommunications telephony Company and give your recommendations

A SWOT analysis of a telecommunication company appraises the company's health by looking at its resource strengths and weaknesses concerning the quality of how it sends and receives data and information globally over communications equipment. The analysis also identifies external opportunities and threats that may help or hurt the company. In this paper we are going to do a Swoat analysis of Kenya Posts and telecommunications telephony company.

In kenya by 1980, the only company that could provide the facilities for communication was Kenya Posts and telecommunication Corporation (KPTC). KPTC was responsible for providing postal and telecommunications services.

1. Internal Factors
The positive thing that KPTC brought to kenya was the capability of expanding their services in the cities and certains villages of Kenya. They could therefore meet the high demand for telephone in Kenya.
In order to fullfil that they implemented three telecommunication development programmes which improved the communication technologyand brought wire line telephone to over 200 locations across the country. Later on they replaced the small manual exchanges in rural areas with digitl switching equipment and optical fiber.

On the other hand the monopoly that KPTC had seemed to alter the ability to deliver good quality and efficient services to customers. Also the level of customer care and service provided was not satisfactory because many customers experienced interrupted use of telephones when its raining since the line cloud remained unrepaired for month..
In addition, the number of telephone lines kept on growing but the ownership of the a telephone line remained very limited.

2. Exeternal Factors
Economic and social development depended in part on efficient communication and with the threat of inadequate communication infrastructure, it was evident that Kenya’s development agenda would be negatively affected.
To face this situation the government came up with an ACT in 1998 that divide KPTC into three different and independant corporation. Theses corporations are TelKom for telecommunication service and the Communication Comission of Kenya.
This new structure brought to kenya a liberalized telecommunication. This lto facilitate the expansion of the telecommunication services and to increase the telephone subscriber base.

3. Recommandation
The KPTC had a initiative to connect kenyan’s through telecommunication and to achieve that goal they brought to kenya the technology of that moment and made it available. Yet the implementation of the telecommunication service was successful at the beginning and the number of telephone kept on growing. On the other hand the maintainance of the facilities was the biggest problem KPTC faced during that period. In order to keep the good quality and efficiency of the communication, KPTC should have hired more technicians in order to regularly control and repair the wires all over the country. Also a team of people to research on how to keep on improving the good services offered to customer.
In addition the availability of the telephone to all customers should be one of the priorities to increase the company ressources since the demand of telephone by then was high but KPTC could not provide to the whole country because their ressources were limited. In such situation the government should retrieve the monopoly from KPTC and allow other telecommunication company to provide services so that the competition can push the companies to improve and provide better services.
