Nursing theory is the term given to the body of knowledge that is used to support nursing practice. (Current Nursing, 2012). The foundation for nursing research was developed by nursing theory, which is important in developing nursing practice. If it wasn 't for nursing research, we would not know of evidence based practice in the way we provide care to our patients in a tried and true manner which gives as the solution we need in the care of our patients. The conceptual and theoretical nursing models help to provide knowledge to improve practice, guide research and curriculum and identify the goals of nursing practice. (Current Nursing, 2012).…

Dr. Pam Koob September 27, 2012 Analysis of Jean Watson's Theory of Transpersonal Nursing has in the last century made a lot of progress thus it has become recognized as a profession as well as an academic discipline. One of these accomplishments was the development, articulation, and testing of various nursing theories. It has been made more meaningful and significant by the theory based practice which has shifted the focus of nursing from vocational to an organized profession. With the development of these theories, nursing has emerged as an independent practice still working closely with the medical profession but no longer dependent upon it. There has been a realization of a knowledge base which has assisted in guiding professional nursing practice. Not only does the theory guide the nursing practice, but research and education as well, resulting in a continually evolving body of knowledge. Most of the theoretical works done by nurses have the intention of making nursing a recognized profession; profession in the sense that nurses should professionally deliver care to their patients. As nurses, we may choose to use one particular theory in our practice but more frequently we use a combination of several different theorists in our practice.…

As advances in nursing science and research impact upon nursing education and clinical practice, new ways of looking at phenomena have led to re-examination and refinement of the traditional concepts: person, environment, health, and nursing. This evolving pattern of intellectual growth holds promise for the discipline of nursing through the advancement of knowledge based upon scientific inquiry into the practice of nursing. A discipline of nursing must encompass a proactive approach to the development theory that not only circumnavigates the present debates, but also bridges the worlds of research, theory and practice. Advancing a discipline of nursing is complex, convoluted and dynamic process. The next century will provide nursing with an opportunity to think nursing; that is, nursing will transcend the philosophy and knowledge of the discipline beyond the present boundaries.…

As I am advancing in my professional education, it is very disappointing to realize that my knowledge of nursing theories has not been emphasized in the Bachelor's degree curriculum. Of course, my training had been very extensive and experience enriched in various skills along with understanding many medical concepts; however, the perception towards the significance of nursing theory has not been emphasized enough. With that in mind, the exposure to theories in this class underscores the fundamental presupposition that without theory we have no practice, at least no high-quality practice. As a result, Karnick (2011) reports that "There has never been a more critical time than the present to honor nursing theory" ( p. 118 ).…
