There are many situations in nursing care where a nurse would apply a nursing theory. As Hood mentioned, a particular nursing theory may fit a clinical situation better than others (Hood, 2014, p.149). This allows the nurse to use the wide array of models to give care that is patient centered. The theory that appealed to me most is Orem’s theory. Orem’s theory states that “the purpose of nursing is to help people meet their self-care needs” (Hood, 2014, p.136). This I feel plays an important part in the recovery of the patient.…
There are many different theories that are used in the nursing profession. Each of these theories have their own concept and uniqueness that can be applied in a nursing capacity. All nursing theories have some form of connection to the advanced practice nurse (APN) practice. There are different types of theories for nursing circumstances. It is important for APN to obtain a good understanding and know how to apply the theory to their practice. Some of these nursing theories are Maslow's theory, Orem Self Care theory, and Watson theory. Maslow’s theory involves the use of a pyramid to address the needs of human beings reaching self- actualization. Paris and Terhaar (2011) used Maslow's Theory in combination with the National Database for Nusing…
Nursing theory is the term given to the body of knowledge that is used to support nursing practice. (Current Nursing, 2012). The foundation for nursing research was developed by nursing theory, which is important in developing nursing practice. If it wasn 't for nursing research, we would not know of evidence based practice in the way we provide care to our patients in a tried and true manner which gives as the solution we need in the care of our patients. I would like to think that nursing education and clinical knowledge from nursing school have been refined and made more relevant through my experience and made me a more effective nurse. The conceptual and theoretical nursing models help to provide knowledge to improve practice, guide research and curriculum and identify the goals of nursing practice. (Current Nursing, 2012).…

Q2. Nursing theories are important to our practice because they “can inform the way in which we view the person, health, the environment and nursing itself”(Funnell, Koutikidis & Lawrence 2005, p.25.) Nursing theories also tell us the “why and when nursing takes place and give us an…
Comparing Grand Theories AFANWINGONG CHE MARYVILLE UNIVERSITY Comparing Grand Theories There are several definitions of nursing theory today. Meleis (2012) defines nursing theory as a conceptualization of some aspect of nursing reality communicated for the purpose of describing phenomena, explaining relationships between phenomena, predicting consequences or prescribing nursing care. Nursing theories have been used and still used today as theoretical framework to guide in nursing clinical decision making and better practice. There are three categories of nursing theories, which include grand theories, middle-range theories and situation-specific theories. Grand theories are broader in scope and more abstract. It includes the mission of nursing and goal of nursing care. Meleis (2012) states grand theories are constructed from a synthesis of experiences, observations, insights and research findings. Middle-range theories are less abstract with a limited scope. It is also easily used in clinical practice and addresses specific concepts or phenomena. These concepts are easily used in a wide variety of nursing care situations and nursing fields. Empirical testing and knowledge is used. Lastly, situation-specific theories have a more limited scope than middle-range theories. It focuses on specific phenomena reflecting clinical practice. It is also specific to a specific population and field of practice. Grand theories are then further divided into four groups; needs, interaction, outcome and caring. Need theorist focus in helping individuals fulfill their physical and mental needs, interaction theorist focus around nurse-patient relationship during time of illness, outcome theorist is based on balance and stability, energy, caring theorist focus on the humanistic universe health process, including mind and spirit. With that said, the table below shows a comparison and contrast of four different grand theorists from the aforementioned school of thought, reflecting…
The future of nursing theory discussion Nursing theory is the framework in nursing practice, so the development of nursing theory can alter nurses’ knowledge and behaviors, and so on influence the nursing practice. In this project, team B will discuss what has driven nursing theory development, what will drive future development in nursing theory, and how might nursing practice change as a result of evolving nursing theory. Specific examples will be applied to explain the points.…
The purpose of this discussion is to compare and contrast two theories that were used as the basis for articles in the readings for this week. The first article applies Virginia Henderson’s grand theory of Activities of Living to organ donation after brain death (Nicely & DeLario, 2011). The second article tests a theory of health promotion for preterm infants based on Myra Levine’s Conservation Model of Nursing (Mefford & Alligood, 2011). This student will give a brief overview of each article and then she will compare and contrast the two.…
Nursing theory can play a role in finding ways to reach these goals and assist nurses in collaborating with patients to determine ways for patients to care for themselves. These theories can offer concepts to nurses and patients that provide direction in teaching them…
Nursing requires daily, hourly and even up to the minute tasks and details. The nurse is reactive and supportive, caring and efficient. It may be overwhelming to keep up with the many activities of daily nursing. But being professional nurse is all that and more. It means that you have an internal roadmap to patient care, a guide that helps you achieve good outcomes. This is where nursing theory comes in. Nursing theory can help you with overt and covert problems, as well as inform your nursing decisions. In the two studies that I read, each used a very different theory to guide their nursing care. That is because nursing is so diverse, and we are fortunate to have had many beacons of light come before us in the form of Grand Theorists. I chose to contrast the Nicely article (2011), using Virginia Henderson’s theory, with the Merrit article(2010), using Hildegard Peplau’s theory.…
Application of Grand Theory to Nursing Practice In today’s world there are many nursing theories and theorists that not only define the nursing profession, but also are used as the basis to guide a nurse in his or her current practice. Meleis defines nursing theory “as a conceptualization of some aspect of nursing reality communicated for the purpose of describing phenomena, explaining relationships between phenomena, predicting consequences or prescribing nursing care. Nursing theories are reservoirs in which are stored those findings that are related to nursing concepts such as comfort, healing, recovering, mobility, rest, caring, enabling, fatigue, and family care”(Meleis, 2012). Meleis describes that the term “nursing theory” gets used interchangeably with conceptual framework, conceptual model, paradigm, metaparadigm, theorem, and perspective leading to more confusion and has perhaps led to less use of nursing theory. Nursing theory is used to explain relationships, predict outcomes or responses, and define concepts that are related to phenomena in nursing(2012). These theories are then shared amongst professionals within the field and may also be found published in academic journals. Practical application of these theories really is what brings the concept to life. For we can read all the research available and but it is through theoretical application that we gain true understanding of the theory.…

Application of Nursing Theory Nurses have to make numerous decisions on a day to day basis. Some are simple decisions and other issues are more complex and require guidance to make decisions. Nursing theory is one way for nurses to make decisions based on problems or situations they face. As Cody (2003) states, “one learns to practice nursing by studying nursing theories” (pg. 226). This statement can be applied to problem solving and decision making. By using theory, nurses can apply concepts to solve problems, since practice is derived from theory. It is also noted by Cody (2003), that “nursing practice will be transformed to the betterment of humankind when all nursing practice is fully autonomous and guided predominantly by nursing theory” (pg. 230). This includes all aspects of nursing including nursing leadership, nursing education, nursing informatics and health policy.…
