The purpose of the chapter is to give students a broad idea of cutting-off skills, and how to appropriately cut-off a group participant.
Identify Five Main Points * The term used to stop a participant from talking is cutting off. Cutting off is used when a facilitator needs to interrupt a group member who is being distracting or talking to much, so the group can keep its flow. * A facilitator must have cutting off skills, in order to shift, hold, or deepen the focus. Cutting off must be timed properly. * The goal in cutting off is to prevent something that is not helpful. * It’s significant to evaluate how much a participant needs to voice, before cutting off. * Sometimes the leader avoiding eye contact can signal a member when to stop talking.
